Alright, so I got a letter in the mail at my ups box the other day from a collection agency saying that I owed PayPal $1235! Said I could pay about $400 and be done with it or I could dispute and validate the debt.

First of all, I never opened this paypal account. Whoever did used my middle name as my first name. I have no idea how much info they had on me for the account. All I know is that this debt isnt mine, it has been like 6 years since this supposedly happened. Can this collection agency come after me and pin this to my credit somehow??

I called the collection agency to have them validate the debt and they sent me records of the transactions.... Then I called them again and I told them it has to be fraud and they said that I had to go to my local police department and file an theft ID fraud case and then send it to them...

I just need some info about what i should do, Thanks guys!!!

    Im in Utah btw

If you didn't open up a paypal account and you're sure that this is fraud then just contact the police and file a report. Don't worry about the debt collector agency just forget about them, they probably wont do anything to you just tell them that they have the wrong person.

If you didn't open that account and they have the wrong person, you didn't do anything wrong. Go to your local Popo and give them all your info, get the popo report and submit it to PP. Otherwise, if it is you, pay the $400.

Well, is there a limitation on how far back you can collect debt from anyways?
