    Backstory

4 odd years ago I started an authority site about a sport that I was passionate about. Over that period the site grew to more than 800+ quality posts and at its peak it saw 22k+ visits in a day (seasonal upsurge). However the cpc for the niche is low (less than $0.80) , the visitors are from a wide range of Non US/UK countries and the KW is largely informational and non-buying one. As a result I never really made any decent money with this. I tried ad sense, clickbank, betting affiliates, merchandising- you name it; but to no avail.

Stats since i installed Jetpack (site was under renovation end of 2013 and wasn't updated much since then)

Frustrated with the failure to make bank, I stopped updating the site and converted it into a aggregator that linked to posts from other popular sites in the niche. Today I went to delete that site and de-index it from google only to realize that about 3-400 people consistently visit the site daily, although the number is steadily declining (20k in Sep to 6k last month). It has a decent link profile from YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest etc and the site is also supported by a Twitter account that totals about 30k+ real followers.

    Domain stats:-

Backlinks to my site are from these kind of domains:-

Since I couldn't bring myself to delete that site- I had an idea, since today, I spent all day doing KW research in the travel niche. Assuming my site was called 'LALakersNews.com', I spent the day doing research on 'Travel to LA' and found KWs with good CPC that could be ranked with a good SEO effort. Here is my question for those who are experts in running big authority sites-

Will it work if I redesign the site leaving one page that aggregates sports news from other sites while the rest of the site is top quality posts about travel to that city? Can i breathe a new lease of life into this baby?

    Possible Site structure-
    - Lakers News (auto-aggregate)
    - Travel to LA
    - Accommodation in LA
    - Adventure sports in LA
    - Things to do in LA
    - Eating and Drinking in LA
    - Shopping in LA

The goal is to retain the sports fans who come daily while use the existing domain to also attract people who are merely interested in travel to the city. Also to earn from Adsense. (Simply coz I don't know how else to earn in the Travel niche). Am i being too unreasonable ?

They are not exactly related niches but to be honest I can't think of any other ideas. This site is like a abusive, unhealthy relationship that I refuse to let go. I want to give it one more.. just one more chance. Personally it would be great if i could make money running an authority site about something I have passion for. Help me make a decision fellas.

    I appreciate your advice.
    Cheers.

I don't know that I would make it travel but perhaps sell tickets, jerseys, etc or use an ebay partner network account. Adsense does not pay well in the sports vertical... I've gone down that road and it was never profitable.

I think you are on the right path in keeping it and repurposing some of the site to give it an opportunity to put cash in your pocket. I would make sure that you keep the gateway pages people are using to access it though... I would not even 404 them; I would keep them and adjust the content in tune with your new vision.

I mean, you could make another section for sports lover, but to be honest, running a travel as well as sports site? I don't know, doesn't really fits in. But I'm no expert so I don't know, just my opinion. Why don't you try to sell the site on flippa or somewhere, you were just about to delete it, selling it could get you some quick bucks.

Exactly, the site will be a perfect fit to sell tickets for sporting events and not exactly good for a travel site.

I did run some sports merchandising ads in the side bar for a while but earned me a big zero. After considering your comments, I think a whole section devoted to 'jerseys' / 'tickets' and then actively targeting those particular KWs could perhaps work. For instance, making the 'jerseys' category page of the site rank in the top 10 of the SERP.

As it is more or less a one page site now (an aggregator) most people come through the homepage. So i can prune a lot of the old pages, which are not relevant anymore.

I am thinking of running Amazon Affiliates on this- a semi-amazon review site. Encouraging people to go to Amazon and click around :)

It's a one page aggregator as of now- I doubt i'd get much for it on Flippa.

Thought of promoting the site on Facebook? Precisely the Jersey and ticket selling category?

One thing is sure, if you don't remove that feed reading stuff from other websites, your site will pretty soon, be dead!

I am also upset with my site. Almost 3 years and still no visitor ? Contents are unique tries hard to make it popular, but failed :(

The feeds are why people come in the first place. Coz they get a whole lot of content on one site, without having to visit many others. I do get organic traffic too. I am planning to supplement it with a lot of new unique content updated regularly to keep the Big G happy.

I am seriously contemplating Facebook but I have virtually zero experience in how to big up a page. Although I think I do have a page with about 1000 likes.

If people are coming for the feeds, why not have your ads between posts in the feed instead of the sidebar? I think the location of your advertising played a huge part in why you weren't able to convert your traffic.

I also believe that you can do more to drive affiliate sales by actually having specific posts and such about tickets, jerseys, etc. For example, if you were doing LALakersNews.com, you could write about the different home, away, and alternate jerseys. You could speculate on new jersey designs or report the latest designs when they come out. In fact, use your own aggregator to see what OTHER people are talking about, and then use that to inspire your own posts.

You are absolutely right. The problem- which I realized too late was the low cpc. and it's not really sidebar but sort of in the midst of all the content. Difficult to explain in words.

Yes what you said is pretty much the consensus in this thread and that's exactly what I am going to do. :) That jersey KW itself is searched 6000 times a month and while there is a good amount of competition- I will surely attempt to thwart it via manual web 2.0/PBN etc. Earlier I had just posted Jersey affiliate links in the ads and that led to nowhere. It's time to go in depth about the damn shirts !
