    Hi there,

Just wondering if you can help me, I have been building some backlinks this month using Paul's quality backlinks and after doing it yesterday I received this email.

    "Dear SEO Spammer,

You have just spammed my site, Urbis.com, by creating a profile for the purposes of creating backlinks to your site.

I am taking the following actions:
    1. I am reporting you to the Federal Trade Commission. What you are doing is illegal. Read the law here: http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/guides/endorse.htm
    2. I am reporting you to Google, which means you will be much lower in the search rankings. Google does not like link spamming.
    3. If your profile spam continues, I will file a civil lawsuit against you.

    -Steve"

Do I need to be concerned about this?

    Thanks

    Guy

It sounds more like a scare tactic than anything else

It's pretty hard to prove that what you did was a deliberate attempt to spam their website

what a douche. Who takes time out of there day to flex their weak ass internet muscle these days? I get spammed all the time, in my email, on my blogs, and you know what? Every time I see it, it motivates me to get out there and do more IM. I would ignore his email, but probably stay off his site going forward.

If you are subscribed to Angela or Pauls backlink, ask about their opinion.

Just ignore it, why wasting time with replies etc.. its unproductive.
And you can piss him off, so he might really do something :)

I usually replay with "sorry" template, just to be sure.

Just say you were outsourcing your work with Indians, and you'll tell them to stop it.

    Otherwise, id just ignore it.

    i like this idea.

empathize with him, stroke his ego a bit. tell them you hired a bunch of Indians to do SEO work and you had no idea that they were resorting to these shady tactics, and that they're going to be dealt with.

Heh, i got the same email.

First off, i'm definitely not a lawyer. I went to the ftc website and read the guidelines that he says we're violating. And unless you're posting a sales pitch, i'm not sure you've got anything to worry about. The law he references is for 'endorsements'. I just put anchored links, for example - red widgets, blue widgets, green widgets. Is mentioning a product name with no context an endorsement? Who knows!

While this technically may be an endorsement, i seriously doubt it was the intention of the law, and it certainly doesn't seem to be similar to any of their examples listed.

Of course the law is new too and hasn't been interpreted or tested in the courts, so there's always the possibility. But if that were the case, every anchored text link would fall under those guidelines and could potentially be considered endorsements. I know our government is inept, but hopefully their intention when passing the law wasn't to clog the courts anchor text link cases.

So like others have mentioned, it appears that he's just trying to use scare tactics. Especially since we all got the exact same form email from him. If he was serious about his threats, he'd go after the people that produced the linking guide. Then he may have a case, but for something totally different.

This is from the front page of their website:
Hmmm...do as i say, not as i do?

I agree with steveo, let him try and prove you did it as spam. If he emailed you that quickly you could easily make the case that he didn't even give you time to make contributions to his site so how could he call it spam?

Even if this was a violation of the law, the FTC isn't going to spend its time trying to prosecute little ol' you for one "spammy link". They have bigger fish to fry.

Leave his site alone and don't respond to his e-mail unless he keeps harrassing you as giving this knob any attention might make him blow his top.

yeah don't even worry about it, i get shit like that alot especially from youtube spamming people nerd rage at me acting like they're gonna do something.

the FTC can't prove you posted those links anyway.

Keep doing it just to make him angry - this is a false threat. It's like when companies put Warez warnings in software. Most don't send your details, but they do scare you into uninstalling the software and rethinking buying it.
