    hi guys

I have been busting my ass on a eBook for 4 months.. which I am about to release soon. And i VERY worried about it getting shared/pirated. Due to the nature that its a EBOOK. I will have copy protection and PDF stamping of the purchasers name/info on it. ANOTHER OPTION IS - I have been debating to put all this content online into a membership area on my site instead. So then it cannot be shared? (site would have anti-copy protection on it).

WOULD LOVE YOUR INPUT! SUGGESTIONS! WHICH WOULD BE SAFER FOR ME.

An anti-copy protecion on websites doesn't exist. Show me your protection and I show you how to bypass it..

What you could do: Watermark your Images with your Brand / Website in the Ebook.

Regress of the watermarking, it can be passed around..is my worry. Since this product is for affiliate marketers i know this is an issue. I have other ebooks for consumers which i am not so concerned about.

The best solution right now is to convert the book to electronic and embed it to your website... There is a lot of software for this purpose... Personally i'm using flipbuilder but you can use something else... Just google it... After you embed the book you can use something like this in your .htaccess file:

    Code:
    RewriteBase /

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_COOKIE} !^.*a2acaf1a224a88c37b88a8e7580b8e43.*$ [NC]

    RewriteRule .* /yourwebsite.com [NC,L]

    RewriteEngine on

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^https?://(www\.)?yourwebsite.com [NC]

    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^https?://(www\.)?yourwebsite.com*$ [NC]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} -f

    RewriteRule \.(swf|mp4|pdf|html|jpg|bin|png|xml)$ - [F]
This way only people who are login to your website will have access to this book

You can also pirate eBooks, there's no certain way to prevent it from happening.

Check out ediitonguard though. Watermark with http://www.pdfaid.com/watermark.aspx then upload to editionguard (free trial).

You guys are being absolutely ridiculous. There is NO SOLUTION!

The reason I know this is because of cameras, digital camcorders, screencasting software, etc...

In fact, there is truly no way to protect information of this nature. There never was, and there never will be. Anything that can be depicted in a physical way such as written words, recorded sounds, video content etc... cannot be protected. Not only that, but watermarking things can be overcome by physical re-creation. A dude will simply take pictures of your content and pay a Moroccan to type it into a new file pennies on the hour.

I understand you believe you should protect your information in some manner and I'm not denying that you as the creator of the content should have some rights over it's reproduction. I'm simply telling you that's not how the world works, so looking for a solution is a bit of a moot point here. The takeaways are a couple things though.

    1. If you provide true value to people who want it - you must take personal satisfaction in their enjoyment of that. Further you can hope that the best in people wins out and that people won't try to steal your stuff and make it their own or sell it and make a profit for themselves while you earn nothing from your hard work. While this might not seem like much as a content creator I prefer to look at this type of thing and recognize the measurable value I extract from my work, i.e. my profit and my satisfaction in the help I provide to others. This is an external measure of worth, and an intrinsic measure of worth. Nobody can take either from you ever - even if they chip into your earnings.

    2. Don't buy whatever their selling. There are many protection "tools" and "softwares" on the market. You don't need any of them because I have a workaround for every protection there is. That said, do watermark pictures, videos, and do place a watermark on the under-side of your PDF content, i.e. a light background watermark. These are deterrents to theft which is actually the best you can hope for here.

    3. Show me the company that can really protect content that is accessed via a membership which I can physically see, hear, or watch, and I guarantee you I can recreate all the content so fast it will make your head spin, and so can approximately 1,673,212 other people around the world. Just hope they don't care about your stuff.

P.S. Just because I know how to do something doesn't mean I would do it. I just think it's silly to sit around pretending the world is flat.
P.P.S. I would be focusing on the marketing side of this which I'm sure you are. Just don't get caught up looking for this imagined solution and forget to get out there selling. Just do the best you can with the low-cost free options, and make your money. That's the best you are actually going to get no matter how much money you spend trying to protect these.

DAVERS i really appreciate the honesty in your post. I guess my debate is which is easier to hack/pirate a PDF or Membership site access to the content.

I do get a lot of satisfaction hearing from people who have bought past ebooks from me on how i changed their life... but again i need to balance that with what pays the bills :)

This is the only method I always think of. But this could only able to find out who leaked it. You can release in 2 parts, and may be to old members first, wherever you are selling. By keeping gape between release of 2 parts, the leak might not immediate, and you may have enough sell. But again there's a problem - you won't have enough reviews.

Just do a hard copy & mail it, not an ebook (if it's that valuable)

ronmojohny, is on the track you should look into....make a lighter version of the pdf then here is the part you may not like as much...
get people sign up with you walking them personally through the full version. I used this method many years ago which went from showing people how to setup a simple website to buying liquidations of whole businesses inventory. How it started was I got tired of the same people asking me the same questions everyday so I walked them through every process....I lucked up to have some really tech nerds joined in which we went from doing simple thing to flipping major purchases together. Not saying that you will take things this far but the loyalty of just going hands on made me a small fortune and when things didn't work I could instantly adjust things.

Thanks guys.. I am actually pursuing a members area on my site. I feel people wont want to pay $100-$140 for a ebook, as well i can put videos on my site as well. I will have all the content publicly available, but then most parts will be LOCKED OUT, unless you have a paid membership to see the locked content. I am also offering coaching for 2 weeks to ensure people who buy my membership have guidance.

    Thanks

This is definitely a great model which should bring you considerable earnings opportunities, and fortunately as I eluded to above - most people are not going to steal/pirate your stuff for personal gain. I have used the membership/free hybrid a number of times over the years, and it proves to be very effective, and profit loss due to theft is generally manageable in this situation, and it is often quite easy to figure out who took your content with a bit of sleuthing. Nonetheless profit loss due to theft is a real and unfortunate reality of dealing in primarily information-based products.

I think you will do quite well as long as your content is valuable which I have no doubt it is. Cheers for moving forward on your business!

Your shit is going to be shared mate, just life with it, if the product is really good people will be ending up buying it (like me) i have bought a lot of products that i first got from free share sites as i feel that the creator earned that money because the content was good, most of the people sharing and downloading are noit going to do anything anyway, they will be out hunting for the next shining thing, i would not worry to much about it if i where you

You probably thought of this already, but setting a high base price would filter leechers probably.
