[HELP] Domain Name & Cheapest Registrar

Hi there BHW community,

I need some help coming with a catchy and brandable domain name for my little project. I´ve come up with a couple of pretty cool domain names but they are all premium and cost thousands of dollars.

Can anyone give me pointers and/or some advice on how to come up with a solid domain name for my website? What words to stay away from? What tools do you use for this (if any) and, also, if you know any discount/coupon code on any domain registrar I can take advantage of?

I have been using Lean Domain Search for years. You can enter a keyword you like, and they will spit out tons of domains that are available with your keyword in them. If you sift through them all you can find some really nice and catchy ones.

In terms of words to avoid - as long as your domain doesn’t infringe on any copyrights you should be fine. You should try to pick a domain that relates to whatever your project is going to be about.

I am a long time customer of Namecheap having registered hundreds of domains registered with them. I don’t have any coupons to offer unfortunately but I can say their pricing is very fair and their customer service is excellent. The admin dashboard interface is also nice and simplified.

Most of the domain registrar's provide offer when you register first. Namecheap, Namesilo are few among them.
 
@Icey Dan Thanks a lot for your insights! Yeah namecheap is def among my top domain registrar alongside namesilo.

Recently i came across domcomp which is a website that displays all the domain registrar websites in terms of their domain registrar, transfer and renewal prices. Pretty cool to see other unfamiliar names for me with very low fees in comparison to some of the other bigger names in the industry.

as long as your domain doesn’t infringe on any copyrights you should be fine.

Namesilo all the way, or dynadot.

- Namesilo if you are a new customer you can find plenty of $1 OFF coupons. Won't give you mine, as they are ALWAYS affiliate codes..

Lots of great advice already here regarding the registration. I would just reiterate to be aware that your renewal rate is sometimes higher than the first-year promo rate.

Stay away from 1&1 at all costs ;)

When a domain is listed as "premium", it's not referring to certain words within the domain name itself ; it just means that it is already owned by another party, and this is their buy-it-now price. A lot of the big players (e.g. HugeDomains) will buy up expiring domains in bulk and then flip them via mass listings, such as the one that you are talking about.
 
Go to namemesh type whatever is related to your brand and it will spit out all types of available domains including brandables, exact match, short etc.

@HiPurple hahah this made me laugh but yeah i don´t consider 1&1 for anything neither :D :P

I got pretty much the info i was looking, for now, it´s time to come up with a good name for my site that potentially i can register for <$10 :D :P But I am really bad coming up with names. The few websites I have build now looking in retrospective, all their names were long and really bad :D :P

I found a NAME!

I found a code from GoDaddy and it allows me to register the domain for like $1.17 but their renewal fee is almost $18 which is borderline ridiculous.

Thanks to @LeapOfFaith promotional code for Porkbun I was able to register the domain for $4 and their renewal prices are pretty much the same as for a new domain, meaning $8.56 and it´s in fact the same price if I want to transfer the domain.

In fact, according to domcomp Porkhun has the cheapest fee across the board especially when it comes renewal fee for TLDs

and; on top of everything, they offer FREE WHOIS privacy and SSL certificate!. So, i am going with them!

Generally speaking, as you probably already know, the shorter the better for the domain name, but you're going to have a rough go of it when handregging a domain. The nuggets were taken awhile back. Your best bet would be to go for something brandable that isn't super long, such as what Flick'r and Twitter did, etc. Take a look at brandbucket to get an idea of what the setting looks like (although those are premium names and not available for handreg).

Glad I could be of some help haha! Have you taken a look at the metrics (if any) of your new domain? I know it is a new one but some times they could have been registered years back and then expired later. It is good practice to check whether it has ever been spammed/penalized. Happened to me once, but luckily the one I registered was clean.
