Services like DomainTools or Gandi offer domain backordering which basically lets you put in a claim for the domain as soon as it expires. This way you beat out any spambots.
 
Backorder it through Dropcatch or Namejet and hope nobody will do the same, otherwise it will end up in a public auction.
 
I know a lot of people don't like GoDaddy, but I've always got the domain I wanted through GoDaddy's backordering service. Once I get the domain, I usually transfer it out of GoDaddy, so you can transfer to any registrar of your choice.
