An expired domain goes through few stages before being released to general public, the whole process of those deletion cycle might take up to 3 months....

Anyway, to make sure you get the domain as soon as it become available you can use drop catch services such as snapnames, namejet, pheenix, etc.

I placed a reserve on a domain name and never got it. There is a grace period for the owner even after the expiration date. Were you able to get it?

To be sure, you need to backorder this domain in all possible places - NameJet, SnapNames, GoDaddy, Dynadot...

After the date of expiration you will get about 75days to renew it in your name. Those 75 days are spited into two, first one will be Registrar-Hold and its duration will be for first 45 days and the second one will be the Redemption Grace Period for next 30 days. And once this 75 days gets completed then your domain will be out of hand.

If it's a COM domain then it will become available again on the 81st day after it expires. There are different things which happen during the drop cycle between different registrars. Where is the domain registered at right now? At some registrars it may go through an auction stage directly after expiration and may get bought before every dropping.

Once a domain hits the PendingDelete stage it will definitely drop. At that point, you can either backorder it through a website like NameJet, or try and catch it yourself using software like DesktopCatcher.
