Over the past couple of months myself and a good friend have started a retro gaming website which covers many different aspects of retro gaming including collections, tattoos, gameplay videos and more.

The site is self hosted wordpress and has a freebie theme.

We have a pretty active twitter account (1500 followers) as well as a facebook page (100 likes) and some stuff on stumble upon.

We had got to a point about a month ago where we were struggling, we were getting just over 100 views a day on the site and the earnings from adsense were awful..

This changed when I found this fantastic site and used a couple things including YouLikeHits, Vagex and Link Collider.

These have boosted our videos on youtube, subscribers and hits on the website which is great because it has boosted us on google as well.

We are now getting an average of about 250 views a day with a few boosted days here and there.
We have plugins to auto post to twitter and facebook and we have a plugin to auto post when we upload a video to youtube. It all works very well...

The main problem is that we are earning hardly any money..... :( About 20p a day average from YouTube and the website.

There seems to be some VERY clued up people on this forum and I would love your advice on how to earn more from the site...

    1. How can I speed up the homepage. It seems to be pretty slow....
    2. What wordpress plugins should I have to improve the site.
    3. Can I do anything else to the site in terms of advertising to get better results.

I do not want to plug the site but would love your feedback if you dont mind having a quick peek???

    thegamesshed with a . and then a c*o*m

Thank you for reading and I hope you can help...

    Thegameshed,

Looks like you are doing very well and headed in the right direction. Speeding up your website could definitely impact your earnings in a positive way. Site speed is one of the largest culprits for low earnings on a website that uses advertising as its revenue.

Because you have a Wordpress site, you could try a caching plugin such as Hyper Cache Extended or Quick cache. You could also install smush.it which is a plugin that reduces image file sizes. These should help increase the speed. Remember that when uploading images to the site to compress them before doing so and make them the size they will eventually be online so browsers don't have to resize them.

As far as gaining more revenue from advertising you may need to have more visitors. You mentioned in your post that you are receiving 250 views per day. Is this page views or visitors? If its page views, this is not the same as visitors and there may be far less people viewing the site than you think. Have you tried installing the Google Analytics plugin for Wordpress to track visitor behavior? Remember that page view data can be deceiving. For example if a visitor refreshes the page, this will count as another page view.

Here is a list of must have caching plugins for Wordpress site speed,

Here are some other plugins that may help you speed up your site,

And here is a link to an article about driving more traffic to your blog,

    Hopefully this helps you,

    Good luck!

Thank you very much for your advice!

Speed up the site first then.. I am gonna check out those plugins..

Is it worth my time and effort creating pages dedicated to amazon products that are linked to the retro gaming niche. I did one recently and feel it was a bit of a waste of time....

    Just a quick point.

I am currently using 000webhost which is free.

We have had issues here and there with the site going down.

Which paid or better free hosting service do you guys suggest?

To speed up the site, use a caching plugin like WP-Cache. In the homepage reduce the numbre of posts shown. Images & Embedded videos can slow down the page load.

And also it's a good idea to serve the compressed content. You can check this option in your cpanel to compress the content of the page and deliver.

This thread is so awesome! I learned a lot on how to make my site earn bigger as well as making my pages faster. There really are solutions in every problem. Before we were struggling to make a mark on page ranks. Then we are slowly making a mark and leaves the mark on a high position. Many thanks OP :)

    Thegameshed,

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. Congrats on getting your plugins installed and working. Before I go on I just wanted to mention that you can use a site called www.webpagetest.org to test your sites speed. It gives a good snapshot of where your weak and strong points are.

As far as web hosting, I don't have experience with the one you are using however I can recommend some that are good. Nexcess.net, bluehost, dreamhost, and hostgator are all fine hosting companies.

For your amazaon question, if these are products that you are not benefiting from (unless they have strong potential to drive traffic to the blog) I would focus on other things first. If they are products that you will benefit from promoting (financially or in some other way), then perhaps spending time making pages would be worthwhile. Keep in mind that if you decide to use Adwords that you may have trouble promoting those pages if they have affiliate links on them.

Hope that helps answer your questions,

    Shawn

    Hello everyone,

Since I last posted we have made lots of improvements to the site including upgrading to paid hosting in order to improve speeds and reliability. We have purchased a theme that really improves the speed and features of the site. Finally we have loads more content as well.

Please have a look when you get a chance.

We are still struggling with Adsense. Earning only about 20p a day. If any of you have any tips or tricks on how to improve Ctr then I would be forever grateful. :)

We had a surge in YouTube views last night for some strange reason and hit about 630 ad hits for yesterday which is a massive improvement on the average numbers we normally get (200-300 ad views and about 20p a day)

    You could try affiliate marketing.
Maybe links to sites like amazon where they can purchase these games, strategy guides, or memorabilia

Amazon and google are really the only two we are using consistently but they dont seem to be doing the biz. we get lots of clicks but no buys. odd.

Would you suggest any other affiliates that are more likely to work

also when it comes to adsense we get most of our traffic from youtube. the website is not getting anywhere near the aame amount of ad clicks.

There are a TON of affiliate programs available. Clickbank is one of the commonly used ones.
I suggest targeting your affiliate products to your audience better.
You might be able to find related sites that do PPC programs. Maybe like a gaming review site.
I'm not too sure about PPC programs, but if you can find one it will pay regardless of purchases.
