Hi everyone, haven't been here for a long time!!

I've been running my blog for 4 years now and it's doing quite ok.

However, when I started, I used to put a lot of effort on link building, promoting, etc. For example, back in 2011, I used to manully submit all my blog posts to various social bookmarking sites (does this STILL work, btw?), use Ping services and so on.

Then, I just stopped that. All I do now is I concentrate on the content, publish a post, submit it to my Facebook page (and my Youtube channel) and that's mostly it.

I get a decent feedback from my followers, BUT I still feel I'm missing something and I could do better as in terms for getting more traffic and publicity for my blog and blog posts.

So my question is: when I publish a new post on my blog, what should I do in 2015 to get the most traffic and publicity? For example, is submitting a blog post link to social bookmarking site(s) still worth it?

Can you tell me, what's YOUR usual procedure when you publish a new post in your website to get the most out of it?

it really depends on the situation but i think that a handful of manual high quality bookmarks will still bring a minimal amount of value

Ok. So the bookmarking is still somewhat effective. Thanks for your input!

When did he mention anything about spammy link directories, for you to insult him? Now you know who acts like an idiot.

If you can get a link from authority social bookmark website and get that link indexed, it will add some value to your landing page.
A lot of link building techniques still work, just think whether it looks natural, filter your target websites, avoid spammed ones and get those links indexed and you will do fine.
You can't rally go wrong with outreach - finding niche relevant blogs and having your guest article published with a backlink.

lol well this thread didn't take long to get personal! anyways...I was watching the backlinko course someone very kindly posted on here somewhere and the guy was saying every time he does a big post he emails about 200 people who might be interested in the post and who have the ability to create links to his post. I know this cant be done in every niche but might help you out :)

I would suggest a lot of social signals combined with some good CF/TF backlinks.

Submitting a link to a social bookmarking site for backlinking purposes is worthless in 2015. For social sharing and traffic though, that's another story - basically submit it to the right sub-Reddit, and if possible get a few friends to give it a few upvotes to kick things off. Also, its not really called social bookmarking anymore =P

Basically, everything blackhat/grayhat from 2011 either doesn't work, or works differently, and you want to think about social a lot more.

Exact match anchor text is a big flag for Google now - you don't really want to go over 5-10% for your exact match anchor text, and you want to save them for really top notch sites if possible.

    On-page over-optimization is a thing now.

E.g. PBNs still work, but now they're built out a lot more carefully (vs. the linkvana/ALN/BMR days) and usually private if you're linking to a site you really care about.

Tiered linking can still work, but again, it doesn't work the same as it did in 2011. You actually want links on real sites for your tier 1s.

The fundamentals of SEO from 2011 still work the same, so using Backlinko's techniques definitely work. The whole philosophy of understanding a niche really well and baking in outreach into your post e.g. linking to a resource so you can email the owner and say "hey, I linked to you", works well. I even reach out to influencers to get a quote or opinion from them - anyone who is well known in a niche got their by being good self-promoters, so as long as your site looks legit, you'll get responses. Its easy to get them to share your link with their followers if they've already given you a quote.

If I'm promoting a post on more a of "niche site" style site then I'll use PBNs and guest posting. If it's on a "brand" site where I'm doing my own writing, I'll do more of the backlinko style promotion where I bake in some angle I can use for outreach.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for your input.

So it seems the quality of the content and thinking of your audience/visitors while you create it is what it's all about in 2015.

Social Bookmarking is not that worth these days. Instead yo can use all social signals to promote. Build more backlinks.

As Eponus mentioned, the Backlinko method is the best approach.

Once you decide on a topic to write about for the post, you can check out the most shared content in that topic at buzzsumo. You can build on the topic and create an even more awesome resource. Then you can reach out to all those who have shared the previous content. It is pretty much a numbers game.

PBN is still effective, but avoid any links from 3rd parties. If and when they go down, you don't want to go down with them. Building your own PBN is quite a bit of work. First finding the expired domains having the right metrics in that niche, then building them out. If you find the right freelancer to do all that work for you, you are golden.
