    This is a message by my friend who is involved in a research.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    How do spammers find my email address? And, what can I do to receive less spam?

    How did the spammers find me? Billions of people receive billions of spam emails per day. This phenomenon ranges from being annoying to being a large financial cost. We will look at how spammers source the email addresses that they spam.

    In this experiment, we post email addresses to the Web (blogs, websites, etc.), newsgroups, social networking sites, forums, web services, whois databases, chatrooms, mailing lists, and microblogging sites (twitter, tumblr) to identify which emails are harvested. Furthermore, we will submit email addresses for e-greeting cards, insurance quotes, free ipad sites, etc. And we also investigate multiple forms of obscuring the email (via image, using [at], html escaping, javascript, etc.) to see which methods work best for preventing spammers from harvesting your email.

    For example, we will have the domain "example.com", and create email addresses like [email protected], [email protected], etc. and maybe the first one will be used in a craigslist post while the second one is used to sign up for auto insurance. Spam sent to either email address will forward to the same place, but we will be able to see which email address the spam was sent to, and so we can determine where the spammer harvested the email address from.

    And I need your help to complete this project.

    If you have unused domains (preferably indexed by Google), and would like to help in this ground-breaking research, please email me at [IMG] with the domain name. All you have to do is place the generated emails in the whois details of the domain (for up to an year). That's it, no other work, no commitments.

    A good number of domains to start with would be 50. So if you'd like to help us out with the project, and bring good to the world, please email right away.

    Thank you!

    This is the response my friend gave:

    Good question: This project is a research. Once we have significant findings, we'll publish them, for the betterment of the email industry.

    How does making the email industry (whatever that is) "better" (whatever that might me) increase profitability, and for whom?
