I am not sure if this is true across all niches, but I think google has gone crazy in my niche.
up to a month ago, I ranked for a very competitive keyword. I think I was #2

now I am #8 and keep going down. results 1-7 have no freaking backlinks (maybe a few garbage ones) and their content sucks (#1's entire site is like 500 words)
What in the hell is going on? How are they deciding which site is good quality? is social now the hot thing, or what? i am really baffled.

Google went crazy a long time ago!

haha but that is very strange. Is your niche competitive at all (Im assuming it is not due to your description of the 7 sites ranking in front of yours)?

yes, very competitive. site #1 used to be a PR6 site, then it was me.
now, that PR6 site is on page 2, I am on bottom of page 1, soon to be on page 2.
sites 1 through 7 are garbage. site #1 has like 100 garbage backlinks and the whole site is like 500 words.

I am definitely seeing some major changes. Websites with little to no backlinks are ranking higher than ones with quality link profiles.

There has been an update recently which I believe is the main reason for the drop in the rankings...

Perhaps that is the entire point of Google's war campaign against SEO is all about. If they change up the front page results sporadically and frequently ie: every couple of weeks, then that would force more and more people to pay Google.

From a business standpoint only, that makes a lot of sense. From an SEO standpoint and quality of their SERP results, it plain sucks and is not a good user experience. No matter what G and Matt Cutts have in store for the future, their bottom line is to increase revenue. They will do anything they can to screw organic results, to force companies to pay for advertising on the top and side of the search results. Don't be surprised if one day there are only showing ads on page 1 and displaying organic results on page 2.

In fact I have noticed a lot of crappy sites ranking well, sometimes grossly overoptimized n shit, but that is definitely not the norm.

As for google planning to go 100% paid listings idk about that.. the number of ads sur has gone up the last years, but damn if they ever go 100% paid im gonna use another search engine. How crappy would it be to have 100% of the search results trying desperately to sell you stuff because advertising costs are so high? lol thats DEFINITELY not the definition of ''quality search results''

However that would mean page 2 results would be more credible?
