I am thinking of registering a domain under a very common name. lets say
GeraldRichardson.com. make a one page site with some impressive flash. SEO it a little, make it come high for that name.

Then call every Gerald Richardson and tell them how would you feel if you had your very own site? well now you can! for only $199! wait, there is more! if you pay right now, I will put my link in the footer of your website for FREE!

does this have potential to make me any money? I wouldnt fall for this, but recently i have found it is wrong to assume that everybody else thinks the same way as me, and some stupid ideas actually work.

Try it once and see what happens. Seems like a decent enough idea.

Not sure why you putting a link to your site in their footer increases the buying motivation...

Your just basically offering them a simple site and domain name for $199 LOL.. Could work though, a sucker born every minute.

Yeah it could work but i'd bet the numbers of people not giving a rats ass would out weigh the benefit.

The FREE link is just a joke. its like informercials that offer something stupid for free.

There are a lot of people, especially very young people (under 15) and older people (over 50) who think its cool to have your own site. They dont care about making money from their site, or how the site looks, or how many people visit it, they just feel good about having their own site.

Bro... People under 15? Short and sweet - Its not worth your time, at least youre thinking though.

You'd be better off knocking on doors and asking if they want their house number painted on the curb.

A lot of retirees (over 60) seem to be glued to the internet in my mother's retirement complex. I think you're onto something with this. You can't lose money underestimating the size of someone's ego. Plus you can upsell by selling them services to upload pictures, etc., in other words, being their personal webmaster. If it becomes too much work, then you can sell the business on to someone else.

Assuming that there will be 100 Gerald Richardsons in the world.

Assuming 20% of them are dumb and 5% of these 20% are rich:

There is a nice possibility ull fall into someone rich and dumb... hehe

Actually, i like ur idea.. give it a shot, it will work.

Focus on common names though like "John David", etc..

I'd try to compile a list of names of business professionals and start with common names from that list. John Smith the architect or John Smith the lawyer might be more interested in JohnSmith.com than John Smith the guy with a blue collar job and no professional reputation to uphold.

If you try doing it with uncommon names you might get accused of cybersquatting, or worse yet, if your sales pitch strikes them the wrong way they might suspect blackmail of some sort.

Instead of that, buy a domain for detroitpetfriendlyhotels . com or whatever, rank it, and then call all the pet friendly hotels in detroit and tell them you'll rent them the domain, or sell them the site or whatever you want. You'll probably have better success selling to businesses that will benefit them rather than people who couldn't care less.

This is a common practice, so research out your keywords and cities.. but it works.
