Even with long tail keywords, the front page of google for these type of sites are always only the big name recipe sites like foodnetwork and allrecipes, etc.

Is it possible to get the number 1 SERP for long tail specific keywords even if the competition is all large established recipe sites?

This is not my site but my path crossed with this couple back in 2006. The last time I checked, they were doing six figures annually with that one site.

I'm talking about sites dealing with a specific type of recipe, like "cranberry juice recipe" or something

Well, I think its possible but for that you need to work very hard. Have to do SEO everyday but build natural links.

That would even be relatively easier if you get the EMD and correct SEO techniques.

from flippa last week....I'm pimpin' it out on Pinterest exclusively because I'm a firm believer that social signals can get your SERPS alone.

I've gotten about 3k UV's in the last week and a SMALL amount (maybe a dozen) longtail keywords in the top 10 Big G

Well, there is more than one way to look at this. What is your goal with this website? Do you want a lively, engaging, reputable website that is to be taken seriously and enjoyed by many? Or do you want a "robotic list recipes every day I don't care what you think of them just click on my ads" website? I am in the niche from hell, which is jewelry. All the major stores and brands fill Google for the first couple of pages. I would not sell much if I didn't have alternative means of marketing my wares. If you want lively and engaging, you have to network to build up a following. The Pioneer Woman who is very popular in the cooking field started off posting recipes on another website which I can't think of the name right now. As someone who is an avid cook and baker, I can tell you that the best recipes are not on page 1 of Google. Those are crap recipes. You can build up a wonderful following if you use social media, especially Pinterest. Also comment on popular cooking blogs. But don't post stupid or generic comments. Be engaging. People will come to your site if you show your face everywhere in the cooking field.

If you want the robotic site that is just for clicking ads, then black hat the heck out of it.

When you are in a very competitive niche, you have to get creative and find other ways besides the serps.

Okay, so it shouldn't be to hard to rank then as long as I have an EMD, the keyword is specific, etc. Right?

It will be a very long process to number 1, but from the little I saw you can easily make it to 1st page for many of the popular keywords.

For number #1 serp , it's take a time but you will get this position. You can use long keyword that is easy to rank. One important point is use easy to understand recipes point, should be unique and try to put keyword in recipes content. Few day ago Google penguin update please read all point before start promotion check out this sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2012/05/27/prweb9546655.DTL
