Usually Google places/Business listings do not decrease the number of organic results on the first page, but today I noticed that for a lot of the first page listings i'm observing there are as few as 5 organic results on the first page.

For example there could be 10 business listing but then 5 Google organic results. Has this been documented anywhere or spoke about by Google?

Yeah, I've seen this happening for quite a while. Not sure if there is any Google publication on it though.

It confuses me, because I don't understand what is happening.

For example, if there is a result on the first page which also has a place listing is Google merging them into one listing?

Is Google giving half of the page to places / half to organic? If so what do we count the start of the second page as? position 10 or 6?

    I'm confused.

Whether the results are mixed organic and Google Places really depends on the search term. Google Places is constantly shifting, so if you are targeting localised terms then get a listing and optimise the page well.

There has been bugginess with google places over the last several weeks, which most likely means a places algo change is on the way. this happens often, but i have never once seen 10 places results on the first page----7 is the maximum that ive ever seen and i watch closely every day. a couple weeks back they scaled back the places results to only 3 on the first page, but last week it popped back to 7.

Just the latest in their ongoing efforts to push out sites like Yelp, because Google likes to have their paws in every possible cookie jar.
