Yeah good times, (taught me how to be a pisshead!) but the world was a bit more stable back in 85-91 ... I would recommend getting a trade I went in the Royal Engineers after starting as a Chef. The Engineers have some great trades that you can use after you leave - electrician, bricklayer, diver, plant op etc ...If you want more action you can go into there Commando or Parachute squadron... good luck

i was going to join a couple of years back but i have a friend in the army (uk).. ill be honest, he put me off it.

lots of work and risk for no where near enough pay.. and conditions suck. you dont get treated with as much respect as you deserve either. He cant hold down a relationship with any woman because he is never in one place for long and he only sees his mates about 3 times a year.

but in contrast he has got used to in now and while i dont think he enjoys it, it pays him a moderate living and he has licences to drive anything from hgvs to forklifts so if he does leave he wont be short of work.
its the kind of choice only you can make but dont buy into all the bullshit the army try to sell you, listen to both sides of the story.
best of luck whatever you decide mate :)

Infantry is just cannon fodder, I think anyone joining infantry would need to be mentally assessed before joining. I guess with the economy as it is people will do anything. A high percentage of homeless are ex british army - they cannot cope when they leave. I got out after going to Iraq the first time. Agree watch out for bullshit from the recruitment office. They will try to put you where they need bodies ...

A bit off topic but why do you want to join the UK army? If it is just for the thrill or experience, go with infantry or something combat related than work as a mercenary that's paid a lot better. Or if you make a specialized unit like SAS you wont have to worry about money I would guess, especially if you offer your services outside of the army lol.

mercenary work pays well but most people wont touch you if you haven't served in the army, its a good progression from the army but you cant just start as one normally :)

they should start on much more than 150 for such hard work imo.. its hard to survive a week on 150 in the uk coz everything costs so much, im not saying the money is bad (in the end it pays pretty ok), its just bad for the amount of work you have to do and the danger you face. my mate works from 6am to 7pm dodging mortars 7 days a week.. hes mentioned doing the mercenary thing ;) i think he should!
i prefer the idea of IM... the thought sitting in my nice chair 8 hours a day is too nice to resist :p
if you want to talk to my friend pm me your email address and ill get him to mail you, hes the best person to talk to about it :)
