just quick: How much harder is it to rank .io compared to .com, .net etc?
It's getting less 'harder and harder', that's for sure. I'm seeing a lot more esoteric TLDs in the SERPs these days. I registered a few .io's myself. The main thing you should focus on is memorability. I managed to snag up these 2 beauties:
searchapi.io
ranktracker.io
The searchapi is live and does what you expect it to do, and I'm sure you can take a wild guess at the other. The beauty of .io domains is that they're quite memorable when used with online products. And I don't mean MoneyMaker2000v8-GetRichNow type of products. Genuine software stuff and blogs.
The price is steep though: $80+ dollars. Which means most domains on .io are of a certain quality.

I dont think tlds matter when it comes to ranking.
