LOL. Americans in 1770's were British. It was an English revolution against a tax-hungry government. They fought and won. Quite different to the case of Pakistan.

Perhaps it's time to learn some history before you offend every British person here.

    That said, happy indepedence day.

As an Indian, may I join your club? I think I'm more than qualified considering the heaps of atrocities the British committed in our land ;)

Well first, Happy Independence Day. However, particularly in the case of the United States, it makes little sense to celebrate a day like this if you cannot discuss the reasons why Independence is a good thing. I know little of Pakistan's history, but am interested to know. Perhaps, in the spirit of celebrating this day, someone could share the history?

Wong's comments are apt, but understated. It is not enough to describe the breakdown in the relationship between the colonies as merely due to high tax rate, there was also the aggravating circumstance that the colonies were being taxed without being afforded equal status with British representatives in the government. But beyond that, there were deeper, and more critical problems with the manner in which the British were governed that a freer American spirit rejected, and these reasons have a direct parallel on the relationship between the American government and it's citizens today, and that word is "patronage".

Traditionally, the influence of "the King" (and his hierarchy of royalty) short-circuited the natural economic dynamics of free-market capitalism. Royalty did not compete in the open market. They used the power of government to tax and enrich themselves and then used those riches and power to give special treatment to their friends. The East India Tea Company is one prime example of how the British government used it's governmental power to give special treatment to a government-friendly corporation at the expense of taxpayers that were not even allowed to participate the system of government that took their money.

Special, favored treatment of select corporations happens today, and is the primary focus of, and the primary reason for existence of, the New American Tea Party. The mass media can misrepresent the Tea Party and cast them as being extremists, but in order to do this they must first ignore the extreme circumstances the Producers in the US are put into, forced by a cooperative endeavor of their government and the favored corporations into virtual enslavement into a system that maintains both extremes of the parasitic class (both the very rich and the very poor) in an economic system that neither of which earn, and neither of which deserve.

In short, the class division is not along the simple line of income, i.e. the "99% vs.the 1%", but rather between the 50% of the people that actually produce the wealth, and the 50% of the people that actually receive. The outrage against the Federal Government against the unfair distribution of earned wealth is the same outrage that was felt against the King prior to US independence.

And we've forgotten the reasons behind the struggle for that independence. Today, we think it's about firecrackers and bar-b-que.

So, this is where I go when I read about a discussion of some other countries fight for independence. Have you also forgotten what it means, and why it was important?

It was a fight for independence against a colonial empire... same principle. Doesn't matter that so many Americans had British roots. We are Americans now.
