Today is my IM Birthday, one year ago, I decided to go on a journey to financial freedom.* I set some goals:

Make enough to quit my job (My job pays well, but lacks creativity).
Make enough so I can work anywhere in the world just with my laptop (the beaches of Phuket is calling me).
Make enough so I never have to rely on someone else having the control of whether or not my resume is acceptable

I'll break it up in four phases:

    1-3 months

Wow! What a mind-boggler. I've been around online during the dotcom days, but didn't take advantage of the opportunities. I got relaxed with the high-salary I was getting and didn't jump on the various money-earning trends.

So here I am ten years later researching endless forums (until I found this one) and reading more than I did in College. I felt like the first three months was a crash-course class. It was confusing and exciting at the same time. I love learning new things (still am) so it was great! I was all over the place not knowing which path to take in order to achieve my goals. So many great advice, so much uncertainty, but exciting nonetheless.

    4-6 months

A pattern starts to emerge, I'm beginning to filter through the same pitch and bs. I've noticed things that I didn't before. Things I would normally overlook like a redirect link survey when all I want to do is watch UFC online brings a smile to me because I'm finally starting to get it.

I started learning, watching and absorbing Photoshop tutorials, Wordpress, and on-site SEO.

    7-9 months

Discovered BHW - the greatest forum on earth. As much as most would assume the people here are on the dark-line, I've had more help here from questions answered, to topics I'm interested in, and pm's that are answered than anywhere else. I never understood why people would post so many helpful things here. After all, why tell people your techniques. Now I know why, because most of you remember what it's like getting help here and you're just returning the favor. Someday I will do the same.

More learning. Back links, Tools of sorts, and concepts. Amazing stuff.

    10-12

Escaping the grasp of reading more information is very difficult, but at some point, it's time to stop and take the plunge. I have slight ADD so picking one thing was difficult for me. I decided to try three different things and see which one works for me.

Created a site after extensive keyword search, research, and back linking. Monetize using Amazon.
Created a site after extensive keyword search, research, and back linking. Monetize using Adsense.
Created a site after extensive keyword search, research, and back linking. Monetize using Clickbank.

I now have 7 websites, 3 are on the first page of Google. Money is finally trickling in small amounts since I just got these positions recently and things are finally coming together.

If you're new like I was (still am because I'm learning everyday) and just found this post, I suggest you learn these as your foundation and focus on long-term quality sites and you will be fine. Don't let the information overload you. Learn and execute within a 12 month or less period.

    Keyword Search
    Research your Competition
Learn how to make a website
Learn basic Photoshop (I like doing my own logos)
    Learn onsite SEO
Learn various tools for articles and back linking
Learn how to monetize your site correctly

It's normal to hit road-blocks and get frustrated, but never give up.
Good luck and thanks to everyone in BHW for helping a newb get here.

Great post, very encouraging for Noobs (like me), but still I believe you shouldn't have wasted 10 months just learning stuff, the implementation phase should have come a lot earlier.

    Anyways, Happy birthday!

I would have liked to have done it in less time, but having a full-time job gave me only a few hours at night to work.

Always good to read encouraging posts like these! I am new to the game, going on about 3monts now and I am making a good 10$ a week. This was a test and now its going to get kicked into high gear! Should see double, triple, or maybe even quadrupled earnings.

I wish everyone the best of luck, and hope y'all can all find good fortune in whatever you decide to do.

I usually get pissed of that I didn't cash in during the .com goldrush... if I just bought good.com or something life would be so much easier.

I know how you feel man. If only I spent my toy money on domains, I would have been relaxing on a beach years ago.

    Happy IM birthday!

I'm pretty much at your 7-9 months step. However I found BHW very quickly when I jumped into IM, and always though it was different from the other boards.
There is a real exchange between members here :)

Yeah I wished I found it sooner. I was stuck at WF and DP for awhile. I bought one WSO and was very dissapointed.
