The NYPD asked its fans on Twitter to post their favorite images of officers with the hashtag #myNYPD.

The attempt at public outreach, however, backfired spectacularly when users flooded Twitter with hundreds of photos of police brutality, shooting victims, one of an 84-year-old man brutalised for jaywalking ? and even a dog being frisked.

By midnight on Tuesday, more than 70,000 people had tweeted about police brutality, ridiculing the NYPD for a social media disaster and recalling the names of people shot dead by police.

"Police officials declined to respond to questions about the negative comments, which were being posted at a rate of 10,000 per hour, or say who was behind the Twitter idea. But they did release a short statement."

Just read about this today, i have no quarrels with NYPD :)

Not sure what they were thinking after all their years of racial profiling with their "stop and frisk" law. I guess they thought everyone forgot about that.

What would be entertaining would be to see the New Mexico police department do the same.

the new mex cops aren't dumb enough to ask. the cops out in cali. should do the same thing, especially after things like this:

Aspiring TV Producer Mistakenly Killed By Deputies in West Hollywood

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department acknowledged Thursday that its deputies mistakenly shot and killed a aspiring TV producer they thought was a stabbing suspect.

In fact, John Winkler, 30, had gone to a neighbor's apartment Monday night on Palm Avenue in West Hollywood where a man was holding people hostage and tried to help.

Winkler's friend Devin Richardson said Winkler was friends with two of the people held hostage and had rushed over to the apartment when he heard them screaming.

"It's just a really sad story", Richardson said. "He basically went to help some neighbors and ends up getting shot."

So this is what happened. I saw references on other sites but didn't know/care enough to search it out myself.

Bet the guy who come up with the idea is popular!

At least they're doing stuff.. In some countries the police does nothing or better yet, the police robs you and sells you crack.
