Okay I have been in front of my pc for about 4 hours now studying reading on different seo methods. I just read something in a different forum that h1 h2 h3 etc. are no longer that important when it comes to seo but some disagree.

    I'm confused which is which?

If these tags are still important. How many H1, h2, h3 tags should be put in a page as to not over crowd each page with the said tags and so that one can have a decent ranking in Search engines?

    Thanks

    Are they still important?

    - Yes

Do all of the search engines weigh them equally?

    - No

Will it hurt you to use them instead of larger font sizes?

    - No

    Just don't overdo it.

    I agree with battman,
They are important and can't hurt.
I usually try to use a h1 tag up top with my main key word, usually my page title. then have a couple h2 or h3 tags through out the site.

Yeah, until SEs figure out an efficient way to interpret CSS, h1's will be incredibly important. Title tags, and h1s are the most important on-page things you can use for a keyword.

I have sites that work without it. I mean I didnt have some of my key words in the tag text and still ranked well for those words. IN G.

I think they will be important and you can make something out of it until the search engines get more clever.

I'm going to disagree with the consensus.

I've built a lot of site for myself and for others. Black hat, white hat and all shades between.

The sites where I've used the traditional H1..H2..H3 don't rank any higher than those that don't. In fact, I'm finding that those without are easier to rank.

I'm talking Google here, not sure about the others.

I put my keywords in the URL and title tag, and just make sure the words appear in the H1 tag and description (but not in order). So if the keyword was blackhatworld link building, I'd put "Link Building Methods by BlackHatWorld" in the H1.

The tags make any article organized into different suptopics and paragraphs, and could still be useful for the search engines in identifying the main theme of the web page

    Yes, guaranteed.

H-Tags are required to depict a professional image as well as enabling Search Engines to source for keywords from these Header tags. This will enable your ranking to surpass competition so long as the appropriate keywords are in place and can rank easily (given specific search wordings)

Looks like SEO is cyclic. The stuff that used to work in 2000, worked again in 2004 and then 2008. Now it's 2013 and it's time to bump a 5 year old thread of course ;)

To tell the truth, I still use H1, H2,H3. It won't hurt if you can't use them. But I think more and more it is not useful right now.
