An Exact Match domain (also refered to as an EMD) is a technique that used to work a few years ago but became less effective lately. I'm saying less because I think it still carry some advantages over using another domain, but you'll still need to optimize your content to rank for this keywords.

Definitely old domains have an edge over new domains.
Things to look for are the domain history, anchors and backlink profile.
The time when the domain has expired is the most important factor.
Most domains that have been expired for some time get deindexed and, in most cases, take time to respond when rebuilt.

ok mate thanks

Old domains have many advantages, but make sure that it wasn't penalized.

I will go with old expired domains any time because I can check their history and track if they were spammed or not. Moreover I am willing to risk some $$ to experiment with old domains. If that is also a case with you then go with old expired domains for sure.

As @roydan has rightly said, such EMD (exact match domains) used to work in the past but may have become les effective these days. This is because there are many other ranking factors that can command the possibility of ranking for that keyword. Even if you buy that domain, you have to constantly put efforts in building good backlinks, good content, etc. to make it rank.

In my opinion, the benefit of using old domains will only be if you restore the structure (urls) of the old domain and get the effect of links

There are some advantages to old domains, such as existing links and their age. Test your domain thoroughly before purchasing it.

Aged domains can be extremely useful for SEO. They have several benefits that can improve organic rankings.
