Recently one of my sites began receiving a TON of traffic from google images.
So much, I can't believe it.

Question is - Could that be consumers? chances are there are many IM people just looking for images... But I'm not sure.

What's your input on that one?

I run a fitness website in the UK. We sell physical products like dumbbells, kettlebells etc.

It never used to be something that i would work on with SEO terms etc, but around 6 months ago we noticed a few click throughs from google/images and so decided to but a bit more effort into this.

The results were good and worth the effort but nothing amazing.

We are getting around 50 clicks from images to our site each day now which is close to 5% of our total traffic. This is slowly creeping up also.

I do not believe it has much to do with the seo efforts made on the images, i just think normal consumer trends are changing and if their after physical products then more people would be searching the images of the product itself rather than the normal serps.

Didn't think about the visual aspect. I just wonder if the traffic is coming from affiliate marketers which is just bandwidth waste. I get well over 100 visits from google images daily. And you know images have weight when it comes to webhosting.

At the moment I get a fair bit to some of my sites, though I'm not sure just how many view the image and leave (like i typically do when searching Google Images) or how many close the lightbox and continue reading the page. I know you can break the frame and force them to your page, but I'm not sure how that affects your ranking in the Image search results. I need to look into more detail regarding tracking from click to conversion for Google images traffic. Seems really cheeky of Google to hotlink your image sin their lightbox without actually just displaying your page.

I have one site that gets a boat load of traffic due to google images and the traffic converts pretty well for some CB products. I didn't anticipate that when I first set that site up as I named the images for SEO purposes and not for direct traffic.

Ok, so this morning I decided to check in on one of my affiliate shops which is getting a good piece of traffic from Google Images. I pop open my analytics reports and started looking in on the actions performed by Google & Bing Images referrals. The bounce rate seems to be very low. To my surprise a good number of the referrals appear to be moving on to other pages. As a matter of fact, checking back for about the last 100 Google Images referrals it seems the average user referred by Google Images views an average of 7 pages before exiting the site. I know, it isn't a long standing evaluation of the traffic, but I don't think it would be much differently if I continued digging deeper. Bing Images has an even lower bounce rate. The traffic isn't near as heavy, but Bing viewers almost all go on to view at least one more item in the shop.

This thread has peeked my interest in digging further into my analytics data and checking out how Google/Bing Images performs, but thus far I can say, it seems they perform much better than I had anticipated. At the rate this shop converts sales and the percentage of traffic that is referred by Image searches, I have absolutely no doubt some of what is converting is Google Images traffic. Luckily the affiliate program I am promoting on this site has some great tracking options, and I should be able to dig backwards from my converted sales and find out just where those referrals originated from. I suspect I will find at least a few sales generated on this traffic.

This is where being super anal about tracking everything comes in handy. Get it? Anal? Analytics? Woop woop! :D

I receive decent amount of traffic via Google images. I am not sure about the conversion rate of those traffic, but certainly worth putting some effort in optimizing the images in your site.
