Managed to get my site to page 8 by myself. Trying to get to page 1. Dude wants to charge me 1500 for 5 months of work but says he can probably get on first page in the first month so I'm guessing the competiton isn't too bad. Do you think he is overcharging???

I'm not an uber SEO expert but I even know that $1,500 for 5 months of work in any industry is dirt cheap. Break it down - the guy would be working for under $100 a week. If I were in your situation I would be asking a lot of questions in terms of what he is planning to do for you - not specifics as he won't want to divulge that info (and fair enough too,) but just a general overview of how he plans to go about living up to his 'first page, first month,' promise.

If he comes back with an answer that satisfies you and you feel he is acting in a professional enough manner then the ball is in your court. From my experiences though I haven't met an SEO person or IMer who would accept $100 a week for the amount of work that is required to rank that highly, even for a low-competition keyword.

He says there is quite a bit of onsite seo that needed to be done. As for offsite seo, I can't seem to really get him to divulge his seo strategy, whether that is blackhat, link building, private network, ect.. Do SEO companies usually offer their strategies up front to clients in detailed format? I have no idea

Take a look at the services section here. Depending on the keyword you may be able to get it to position #1 for much less. In SEO it is all about how much competition there is. If there are a lot of competing sites it will take a long time and a lot of work to get where you want to be, but if it is easy, you could get there in no time at all.

Seems to me like he is scamming you. Onsite SEO is not that hard and you can do it yourself. Spend some time reading and you will figure out what's wrong (if there is something wrong). You'd better look for a service here. For 1500 you can buy quite a lot of good services which will help you for sure. If you want to hire him break the payments into montly payments of 300. Don't give him the whole amount in advance. Pay the monthly fee only if you see some improvement.

Forget competitiveness of the keyword, how many exact searches per month?

If you're paying $1,500 to rank for a term that gets searched 100 times a moth then you better make a killing off of each "sale" or however you're monetizing this.

Look at it this way, if it's searched 1000 times a month and you rank first you're expected to get 420 visitors from it. Let's say you have a 5% conversion rate so 420 * 0.05 = 21 sales/clicks/whatever makes you money.

Multiply that by what your normal profit/sale, let's say $10, and you get $210. That is the expected revenue you'd get per month being ranked first so you'd have to pay less than that for SEO to make a profit from your actions.

Change the formula to your stats/numbers and you've got what ranking first is worth to your site, make sure you pay less than you will make from it to keep a profit.

42% is generally regarded as the percentage of traffic the first result gets, could be different in specific cases.

    Formula: (( Searches * 0.42 ) * Conversion Rate) * profit/sale = About how much 1st place is worth to you.

I would suggest getting a service from BHW.

You can get a decent service here. Let's say its $67 for 1 package. You can get 10x of that package for $670 and depending on how hard your competitions are you will be on google's page 1.

For $1500, I suggest getting services of BHW + fiverr gigs. You will get more for your $ and definitely left-over $ when you reach page 1.

Honestly though $1500 is not a lot of money depending on what they are doing. For many of my high end clients this is a low end monthly charge for them.

My idea: Find someone who has proven results at ranking his websites AND monetizing them (As i have learned, it does not help to be on the top of google for keywords that either nobody uses and/or have little commercial intent. ) and then offer to do a non paid internship or slightly compensated internship to help him roll out a bunch of new websites. Obviously, you have to have some knowledge and experience with Internet Marketing and be willing to put in long hours with little to no pay BUT in return for that you're going to learn all the tricks of the trade.

Paying that kind of money is pricey, there's no guarantee of success and even if you do rank well how long will it take to recover your investment? Also if he is not teaching you what he is doing you won't learn and will always be stuck paying someone else to help you rank your sites. Just a thought.

$1500 is not a lot of money, when the effort and results are taken into consideration. In fact for some niches, I know clients who would not mind spending that much a month, for month's together! While Onsite SEO is easy, I will not deny the fact that expert advice comes at a price.

Else, you can download Internet Business Promoter (IBP) out here int he downloads section, and get a free website audit. You can then decide whether to give him this chance or not, based on how good/bad your onsite seo is

Like a few already above me, I will say the same thing:
I, and many others here, will do it for $1000 and probably even do a better job.

There's no way that I would ever charge so little. I suggest that you ask for a list of sample searches and references.
