Blog commenting is not banned by G. He either doesn't know what he's talking about or he may mean that a site or IP has been blacklisted by certain blogs, e.g. using Askimet.

Manual high PR blog comments work wonders. If you are talking about mass spam then yes it can do harm to you website.

It's a crude form of backlink. But still very effective

He probably just told you that to keep you down, or try to cut out competition, but I don't know, seo isn't really my thing :)

Blog comments are very low level in terms of backlinks. But they do work well for second and third tier links and even some directly to your main site - for link diversity purposes.

Blog comments are still effective. Moreover, they may not have that much value, but if you use them the right way, they will be very beneficial. Blog comments work best when you need to diversify your anchor text and referring domains and ips.

That is how I use them now. I generally use them for generic and partial match anchors.

If he is talking about mass blasting of blog comments, then he may have a point.

the problem is when people ususally talk about blog commenting they ususally mean commenting on crappy 0 PR sites with 4k+ out bound links. Blogs commenting is a great way to get backlinks, but just like all other backlinks you want to look for quality.

Google hires the best engineers in the world. They have massive servers crawling trillions of pages every day. They handle billions of search queries every day.

Yet they can't program their algorithm to detect the comment section of a page? Think about it.

They know people are out there spamming links into blog comments. Do you really think google hasn't figured out how to simply no follow those links?

I don't think google is that dumb.

Quality blog comment works. I remember I had ranked one keyword only through blog commenting. And that ranking is still going strong without any other backlink activity.

Sorry but this makes no sense.

Blog comments are legitimate backlinks. People normally drop their link on blogs when they share information with one another through them and google has no issue with this. It is when people abuse blog commenting with programs like scrapebox to comment that google has an issue. This is why spammy high OBL blogs can hurt your site and Quality Blog comment links give you Proper Backinlink juice.

And as far as nofollow yea a lot of blogs do have the nofollow attribute, but nofollow still gives off backlink juice.

    Nofollow doesn't pass any pagerank.

Moreover, nofollow does have some ranking benefits. I have several websites ranking front page simply using youtube as backlinks, and they are nofollow.

No I think blog commenting works! It is important to comment on blogs that are related to your keywords in order for you to get high quality backlinks.

Just because some guy ranked a few sites doesn't mean that he is a master at SEO. There are a million ways to rank a site. Comments work and they don't. It really depends on how you are using them, as well as the current demographics of your site.
