    Hey,

Any good guides on setting up WP MU site and wildcard domains using cpanel, probably through a shared hosting account.

    Thanks

I wonder if you can even use mu on shared hosting...I've been trying for a while and my eyes are tired now...

To put Mu on shared hosting you would need root access which means you need to make a call to the guys in back. They will most likely say NO f'ing way.

Even with my VPS install I needed help the first time. After that tell them you want to make more Mu installs and they'll do some magic on Apache for you, then it's actually boring installing them. Go :cow_yello

just install WPMU and put add * as a subdomain throu cpanel.

    example:
    *.yourwpmudomain.com

    It is pretty easy.

That's just part of it, wildcard DNS is standard on my server. The challenge is during install when you need to set permissions for the ROOT of the server and then back again.

The guys in back need to change the permissions for you, they tried to splain it to me how they did it permanently but I tranced out pretty quickly.

Start the install, make the call when the install gets to permissions, it's not that bad.

I don't know how to set up the server for virtual hosts.
I was talking only about WPMU :)

So...anyone have any luck with the install?...

I've tried and keep getting an error "Can't establish connection with database"...I checked and double checked the details and it's all correct and hostgator says everything is already on or enabled according to the manual...

A couple things to check...make sure that in the wp-config you use yourusername_dbname and yourusername_dbuser not just dbname and dbuser. You don't have to worry about the password. Also, when setting the domain address during the install, don't use the www.

Hey, that did the trick nicely :) I was putting yourusername_password and it wasn't connecting, then did it without, and success...

Just had to email hostgator for some help with the wildcard domain and editing the DNS zone...but it was much more easier than I thought...

Using Tilt4832 method (described above) I got a WPMU site in no time flat..

    This is what I did..

Went into my cPanel account, and created a sub-domain with the name of *

Then went back into the sub-domain section, and redirected the * sub-domain to point to my main domain..

So, for example, I redirected my * sub-domain to my http://mydomain.com url and pressed the button..

All done.. It couldn't have been simpler.. No messing about with http.conf files, no messing with DNS etc..

It just worked.. and its the method they suggest on the HostGator forum as well..

    Hope this helps someone..
