Okay, I do not particularly like horizontal backlinking for my websites. Before we dig deeper into this discussion let me explain to you what it means by horizontal and vertical linking...

Horizontal Linking: Your backlinks are single tier and usually follow a predefined set of linking techniques in order to get proper link juice flow to your money site.
Example: Linkwheel [the standard one], Uni-tier Mininets.

Why I believe we should quit using, or atleast modify the horizontal linking stratergy ?

    • Its due to the following reasons:
    • Your backlinks do not usually carry much authority.
    • Its leaves a SEO footprint. [Remember standard linkwheel is not very effective now, thats because google caught up with this llinking schema]
    • Its time consuming to interlink your web properties [My personal opinion]
    What is vertical linking?
Vertical linking is a backlinking schema in which in which your web properties are multi-tier with little or no interlinking within a tier.
Example: Lets say you have a blog farm whcih is not interlinked..
you set-up another autoblog network pointing to it..
Now this autoblog network has links coming from web 2.0 sites..
Web 2.0 sites have link comign from profiles..
Profiles have links coming from social bookmarking sites...

This is a pretty solid setup, due to these reason:

    • It does not leave any seo footprint because its pretty random.
    • The authority increases as you go up the tiers and finally to your money site.
    • Its easier to spam links in vertical schema rather then going back to forth to interlink them
These are my personal opinions, if you think otherwise, do let me know. Would love to hear from your perspective...

I agree that between those two options, vertical linking is much better and, in fact, horizontal linking may be useless due to the footprint.

However, they are not mutually exclusive. Let's say you have a number of vertical structures all flowing through to your money site. I think it's beneficial to have some links among those vertical sites -- not necessarily all on the same horizontal level.

The key is to make it look random.

But I think its much better to expand your current BL empire then interlinking them...
