This is a whitehat mathod, but its got a little trick that should make quite it at home here. Not sure if the methods been shared here or if its well known, but I thought I'd write a little guide about it:

Using a topsites to get links from your competitors

You are going to set up a topsites (on a seperate url or on a subdomain, I usually choose a seperate domain because for what it costs its definatly worth it). Once you've got a domain you'll need to download and install aardvark topsites, get it here(free): http://www.aardvarktopsitesphp.com/ and just follow the instructions.

Customize the topsites with a logo, I buy mine because my design skills leave alot to be desired. Now your going to make a simple mod to the topsites, you'll find the mod you need on this page, its called "In Anywhere" http://www.aardvarktopsitesphp.com/mods/ download that and install it, the instructions are pretty straight forward. When a website joins the topsites its given a piece of tracking code thats used to gauge traffic and rank them accordingly. the "In Anywhere" mod lets you include a different link in the traffic code, this means you can place a link to your main site, eg the one your link building for, on all your members websites.

Now then, find a topsites already in your niche, or google about, visit all the sites that your compete with you and get their email adresses. Send them an email (usually from [email protected] or webmaster@... etc) explaining you've opened a topsites (don't link to your original site your link building) which you intend to drive traffic to, tell them once signed up their website will be ranked based upon traffic and they stand to recieve traffic from the site. You should hopefully get a sign up, which means your link on their page. All the links are sitewide too and are ********.

These kinda sites are often subject so some spam so make sure you manually approve all sites and take a few minutes every few weeks to clear it up.

Hope some people find that useful, and I hope it makes sense (its late here...). Any questions or if its unclear in any way post here and I'll do my best to help.

menly-

Good post! I don't think that this method has been posted before (if I'm wrong, I just haven't seen it). I especially like the way that you make contact with your competitors with an offer to increase their traffic. It seems like it should work.

What's been your experience doing this?

Thanks given. :)

Interesting tip. I'd never heard of topsites before today. I had to search around to better understand your post.

one thing about topsites that even if properly configured, it is bandwidth and processor hog.
