Woke up this morning to 2 dozen (plus) Google Search Console notifications for 'new owners'- every last one of the notices was wrong. All of the users were existing users and owners on the accounts in question.

Anyone else getting spammed with mistaken new owner notices? I think this happened once in 2024 after another error but haven't seen anyone else experiencing it recently and haven't seen Google comment through usual channels.

Sounds like a GSC bug rather than actual ownership changes.

If the users are already listed as owners, I'd just verify the permissions directly in GSC and keep an eye on it before changing anything.

Sounds like a classic google console glitch during backend maintenance. As long as the users in your search console user management tab haven't changed you can safely ignore those automated emails.

Yeah I’ve seen a few reports of this recently and it looks more like a GSC notification bug than actual ownership changes. There are reports from August 24 of people getting “new owner” emails for users who were already owners, so you’re definitely not the only one seeing it.

I’d still check the Users and permissions section directly rather than trusting the email. If the users are already there with the same permissions, I wouldn’t change anything or remove anyone just because of the notification.

I’d also keep an eye on Google’s status pages. I don’t see a specific Search Console ownership incident listed there at the moment, so it may be a notification system issue that hasn’t been formally documented yet.

The fact that all the “new owners” were actually old owners is the part that makes this look much more like a bad notification event than a security problem.
