I've never done my seo myself. That's my new years resolution. I chose to learn gsa ser, just bought gsa and captcha breaker.

i'm not in a hurry to build 2 million links a week, just want to get a feel for the software and take it slow.

So im repurposing an old laptop, and i'm planning to use the built in proxy scraper. Anyone did this when they were learning gsa? Thanks for the input.

It depends on a lot of factors

    - Port Speed of your internet
    - Ram
    - Processor
    - Storage

Thanks for the reply. So it is possible to start building links using the built in proxy scraper? I have a modest set up on the laptop, like 4gb ram, 2 cores 2.1GHz each cpu, 200Gb storage and 5mbps connection

First of all congrats on ordering this top notch software. This is one of better moves you have made this year :)

With this specs it won't be a hurricane that's for sure, but for your purpose that laptop should be a good starter. Just get yourself a good list and you are ready to go.

Also from my experience you may test it both with ethernet connection and wifi and see for yourself which one brings better results if any :) For me the cable does the job a lot better.

If you are doing seo for the first time, dont test it out on your main website. Building thousands of links directly to your website doesn't work today.

The public proxies you're going to get with the built in proxy scraper are really, really slow and die all the time. If you can afford it buy some private or semi-dedicated proxies. It seems your laptop is on the slower side, so don't go over 100 threads and you should be OK.

if thats the case it will take ages to make backlinks, just order a $12/month VPS less hassle and no electricity bill + high speed internet

It would be much better to use a VPS for GSA. Also, to learn GSA, it'd be the best if you watched some Videos (Tutorials) on YT.

AS mentionned by howard, a VPS is indeed more appropriate. BUT, there are quite a few people starting to run GSA on their own computer.

First, you still want to use proxies if you have a fixed IP with your home connection. If not, you can care less about proxies.

If you want to use a laptop, the minimal would be a dual core CPU, between 2 and 4 GB of RAM and ideally a SSD.
The reason about SSD is because of the way GSA is handling logs. It is writting the visited URL and the backlinks in a text log file which through time become very HDD intensive.

Get a VPS! I don't know in which country you are, but getting 100/100 Mbit/sec lines costs a lot + electricity. Not to mention 1 Gbit/sec. Even if you are in countries like Bulgaria or Romania where you can get 100/100 lines for 30 euros, still the total cost will go over 50$ per month considering only internet and electricity. With 50$, you can get a VPS with same specs and awesome lines (if not better if you know where to look). And if you push GSA to the limits of your specs, your laptop will pretty much be unusable for anything else and sometimes you can't even browse the internet with that lag. Been there, done that; switched to VPS and I am glad I did.

Thanks for all your replies! So now I have to shell out $20 for proxies from buyproxies and another $37 per month for Kontent Machine according to Matthew Woodward's tutorial. That's a monthly cost of $57. Hmm.. but I just want to learn the basics of the software for the first month or so. is there any way to further cut costs?

You'll need the proxies, there's no getting away from it really. I like Kontent Machine, but there are other sources of spun content you can use. If you are just practicing with it, and quality is not too important, then you could probably find a free spinning tool that will auto spin articles for you.

As already mentioned, VPS and proxies are must (i use semi dedicated) - also try and get SB to harvest your own list for optimum results.

    Stage two, get UD:)

You dont need kontent machine for learning. If you want to create tons of projects, post tons of backlinks - than you may need kontent machine. Buy $10 proxy pack from buy proxies - you dont need more for learning. 5mbps connection will be enough for learning and running ser with 30-50 threads. When you will need to run more threads than buy vps/dedicated server.

Fyi costs of running ser at medium level are quite high:
    - dedicated server or strong vps - $50+ / month
    - proxies for posting $20-30 / month

    And:
    Lists service - $30-$100 monthly
    or
    Own list creation:
    - Proxies for harvesting $30-50 monthly
    - Harvesting software (scrapebox or Gscraper )~ $60 one time
    - Server power for harvesting -$XX (one dedicated server for posting and harvesting can be enough)
    - Additional Ser + CB license + server for harvested lists processing can be very helpfull.

As you can see costs of running ser can be quite high, and its still medium level - not hardcore.

P.S. You dont need ssd for ser if you buy dedicated server. Vps with ssd may be faster than with hdd.
