Roaar - I'll tell you a short story:
I started a new job for online marketing and seo stuff for an online shop 2 years ago. In the past this was a parted project owned the half by the biggest player in the niche. His shop has an 11 years old domains, massive backlinks and is mostly in the top3 of all brand names and other related keywords.

Now i pushed the new shop - which employs me - to new heights and the revenue was skyrocketing from 15,000 to 60,000 per month. The other boss, which ownes the older shop and the half of the new shop got angry and divorced from the new shop because he has a loss of customers.

Of course this guy has build a lots of bigger customer database worldwide this ten years and has a big fanbase.

Now he monitors every step I make and lets his staff repeat this. I start a long term link bait campaign - he repeats it. I start a facebook campaign - he repeats it and so on...

Caused by his wider audience (due his bigger customer db and his more famous name) and the trust of his aged domain he gains more links from my methods, gets more fans from my campaigns and so on - This is so FRUSTRATING. I think we will be on the second place forever...

    Any hints or ideas?

Build links to 301 redirected domains. They won't be able to see those links...unless of course they are watching goog alerts for every keyword...

Offer a big discount for his past customers who now purchase from you.

    Maybe start an affiliate program?

Start a blog and report about all the things they are copying hehe

I really mentioned to do the last step. But i think it'll hurt our own reputation. I want to define us as the good ones in the bizz

I'll share a nice method for others here in similar situations. I did this in my time as guerilla marketer (now I am in a "luxury" niche and the risks are to high).
    1. Engage totally normal in the biggest forum, related to your competitors niche. Just use this forum as home page, and post one simple thing every morning on this kind of useless "What did you have for breakfast this morning" - Threads.
    2. Mention in one post that you will purchase something on competitors site.
    3. Repeat step 1 for a few days.
    4. Write a bad review about customer service, long waiting time, unresponsive support, old stock in that forum and ask other what to do.
    5. Blast an massive amount with the competitors shopname on this thread.

Evil, but effective - However in this case i wont use it.
