Should I try follow unfollow for such a niche? Or is ads the only option?

follow unfollow works for all types of niches only your targeting has to be good.
Ads on the other hand is expensive and it is much better for getting more engagement on specific posts.

Yes but I don't see anyone that runs kinda similar account doing following unfollowing. I worry that maybe since I have a link that this may cause an instagram ban. I had tried to promote a fiverr gig with follow unfollow but instagram banned the account and later I read that nowadays if you do follow unfollow with a link, you get banned. Do you think this is true, or there is something else going on? Maybe related to account age?

They only best way to grow your account organically is to post reels as they have the potential to reach a large number of audience. You can make engaging reels of your content and share them on daily bases. Most of the other conventional methods are no longer helpful.

Do you have to do video production for each reel? Or a static picture with some audio is good enough?

Make controversial/provocative content, set it up as reels, history, politic & religions accounts can easily go viral with that type of content, you can achieve that result only with slides images & text.
I'd also say Shootouts & M/C method. Don't do F/U (for main acct) this shit will just kill your reach & destroy your account score.

If you do follow-unfollow with link with a new or not that old account it's definately get banned you need older account with a high trustscore, its related to the account age and the trustscore completely.
And f/uf works with every niche, it's the best and cheapest method out there to initially grow till a stage from where you can either add other methods or run ads for it
