Gotta laugh - boss wants me to spam

So yesterday I was sitting in my office when I got a visit from the head of the organisation and his loyal off sider.

They have a proposal for me - they want me to spam the entire customer base of around 60000 people, by email and sms. Also want me to set up autoresponder campaigns, online polling etc etc.

Nothing unusual in that - except I don't work in the IT department, or marketing or anything like that. I am do Industrial bargaining campaigns, organising workplaces and the like.

But now they are want me to buy a whole bunch of shiney new toys, load them onto my laptop and play with them. So it's a win / win. I get access to lots of things and spend a lot of time setting up campaigns - and instead of doing it in stealth because I am meant to be doing something else, I can do it all out in the open.

LOL - they are even paying for my wireless access etc each month.

You're right - it's not technically spam as we have an existing relationship with the people that we are sending messages too. However the tools that we will be using are spam tools, and the research with be spam based. In reality we are going to send a couple of hundred thousand emails in a short period of time to various workers. This means we have to get around the spam filters that are there blah blah, to stop the emails being blocked.

Also there is no chance of being added to the 'white' lists to ensure won't be blocked because we are a union and the employer may be keen to actually try and stop some of our messages getting through.

Nah - not doing it from a wireless connection. Given the numbers we are talking about it would take days to do it from a wireless connection. It will be server based tools that we used. But the wireless will be used to enable me to do 'research' or manage things while sitting around at airports or in hotel rooms or wherever the hell I am based that day lol

Given the description of your position, why did your boss think you would be the right go to guy for that job?

Why would the big boss bypass the IT and Marketing dept and give you the job?
This is considered spam actually since even though it's a customers db, they probably never agreed to receive more than corporate emails from you guys.

You could also slap a cookie stuffing code in all the emails.

Yeah there are some killer ways you could monetize this subversively and still accomplish the goals your boss wants you to.

Definitely go for some cookie stuffing.
