I aged my account and made a few legit edits before starting to build my own links from the edits. The links I built were seldom and spread apart by a week or more. I did get a few messages when submitting edits that I might be doing it in my own favor. Can anyone give me tips on how to avoid this from happening in the future?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Don't just age the account, you need to actually use the account while it's there and not just let it sit.
Make legitimate edits, not just a few, several. Make sure some of them include links, so that when you're going to be pointing to your own site from a Wiki page, it won't look as unnatural and won't trigger anything if done right.

I agree you should utilize your resources you can get good backlinks from that wiki account, try to make quality content and diversify your links and slowly link back to your site.

Wasn't spamming. I was editing dead links and replacing them with actually quality content. For some reason there spam detector was still going off.

other "editors" are reporting you, you are going into their playground and you have to do it slowly, maybe to concentrate more on text editing until some point where you have enough quality contributions/edits to get more "freedom".

It will not happened if you're not abusing the wiki or not following their rules. You can change your IP or contact the support to help you.

You need to keep editing and adding authority links. Yours will have to be disguised so it cannot be auto picked.

You need to join some project groups on wiki, work on template edits, do edits outside your niche, don't battle with anyone. When you want to add links for your company or client add it from a non user and if someone takes it off try to start a consensus in the talk section and then use your actual account to support the argument.
