My main site was getting 7,000+ uniques a day... Netting x,xxx a month. After penguin it dropped to 500 UVs and xx per month.

I tried many methods. I deleted tags, related searches and even the side bar. Did not want anything repeating on the same page. Well let me tell you, that did not work. I de-optimized my site to the point where it was just top menu and the article below (no side bar). I thought this would help, well it didn't.

4 days ago I went crazy. I changed ALL my permalinks (It's a wordpress blog).

    I changed from SITENAME.com/date/postname

    to SITENAME.com/postname

So every article I backlinked to is now a 404. (Thousands of backlinks I had with specific anchor keywords for each article are now dead.)

    Second thing I did:

Every high PR site I owned I linked to my money site (just for the PR authority). All those sites (all 6 of them) had nothing to do with my money site niche... I just wanted the PR. Well I deleted those backlinks.

Third thing. I reloaded the sitemap and re-submitted to google.
And BAM !! Yesterday I went from 500 to 1200 UV's. Today I am up to 1700 and it looks like it will keep growing.

I am not sure if the permalink change did it or the removal of the links that had nothing to do with the site. I really doubt that the links were the culprit as I xrumered the shit out of that site so it has thousands of others worthless backlinks.

Or maybe google updated again? Not sure. Just wanted to share with you guys out there who are in the same boat as I am.

I figured I would 404 all my indexed pages, since they were dropped a thousand results down. (No kidding my SERPS were wiped from google, 90% of pages were not even in top 1000)
That 500 UV's pm was just traffic from BING/Yahoo/crappy SE ... I had no google hits for weeks.

I have no clue how this will going to turn out, but good luck. For me it seems like a scary thing to do, but extreme situations need extreme actions sometimes.

I also have some links from my own high pr sites pointing to just one or two sites, which are unrelated, at first (like two years ago) they gave some boost, now maybe I should remove them too since I feel they're worthless.

Yes, it's a extreme move for an established site with many post. My site had over 50 articles and was 2 years old. Now my articles are popping up on page 1 again. Most of them under different sets of keywords but still in the same niche.

    That's the one right there.

Removing that helps a website by a lot.

Also the changing of permalinks with 404 helps because Google has nothing to penalize.

But i removed related searches 3 weeks ago with no results so in my case this did not help.

Yeah you are probably ranking way more organically now instead of forcing it with low quality backlinks. I imagine this method will work nicely for sites with 25+ articles on there but idk about micro niche sites.

I don't know, doesn't mak sence much.Your previous links aren't 404, wordpess recognize when you change the permalinks and redirect old links to new permalink structure. Also deleting the small fraction of backlinks again shoudn't make much chage. However the best thing is that you are in the game again.Where are you getting those visitors from now, is it the same keyword you were previously getting traffic? Are you in the Google's top 10 now?

Yes. I am getting in to the top 10 now, just 2 days ago I couldn't find my site in the top 100 pages. My opinion is that Penguin is all about backlink quality... Since I 404'd my pages which I xrummered to now they're getting re-indexed again under a diff URL... Since my niche is low level I am back on top.

It could have been the panda refresh yesterday.

I won't mess with the permalinks... Since they did not hurt after update there is no reason to change it back.

I'm surprised no one added this but the closer your page is to your tld, the better it is for google.

So mysite.com/article is better than mysite.com/category/article

You keep saying u 404'd your links, but with wordpress when you change your link structure, or even change the name of your link, when you go to the old link(s) it redirects to the now one. Just saying. Maybe thats not a bad thing tho

Since when? I got WP 2.7 because I am REALLY attached to my skin which was NOT updated. There is no redirection going on my site.

From what I read, the update to Panda was super minor. When panda 1st rolled out my site was not affected at all which leads me to believe that my changes must of had some impact on penguin.
