OK so... I have been doing my homework and learning plenty. I get good results with my own projects. I have a few sites with #1 ranks, and I never wanted to be a SEO specialist, I just wanted to avoid the price of seo specialists. :)

A customer asked me how I got my ranks, and offered me $300/Month to help him improve. Now I am his SEO guy and I want to do my best for him.

I have ONE specialized question.

What is the best way to pick anchor text? What's the best way to find keywords with lower competition, and decent search numbers to key in on? I know this is touchy, people don't want to give up secrets. I'm not a huge competitor. I just have one guy I'm trying to help, so if you would be kind enough to reply, I'd greatly appreciate it. PM is OK.

I'm humble and I keep my mouth shut.

Thanks

that's why no one gets anywhere with seo.

You actually asked 2 questions. The first one need more info as to what application for the anchor text?

The keyword research question has been asked here many times so you might try the search bar
here's one search result

Oh and congrats on the seo gig. Just so you know, seo gigs can pay big $$, for example dentists are willing to pay $1200/mo that I know because a dentist told me so.

I cringe every time I see one of these fucking posts.

What's the best way to pick anchor text? Are you kidding me?

Please just tell the guy you are unable to do it and give his money back.

This is basic SEO!

And this guy says he has been in business for 20 years!

He even paid for 100 domains in 1993

No disrespect OP but I think you talk a lot of nonsense and are asking very noob questions to be believable.

You might get better responses if you ask a question without all the extra BS

A little harsh, but if the shoe fits, LOL.

lol I'm pretty sure no one had more than a couple domains back in the day then.
I had a handful(handful as in like three) in the late 1990s and I hated paying $35/year for each domain! And that was when no one had a clue where the internet was going, so buying 100 domains would have just been stupid. In 1993, he could have bought 100 of any domains he wanted! lol

Talk about putting the cart before the horse!

You can Google info on optimal anchor text ratios.
As a general rule of thumb I try not to let me money keywords get about 10% and I use a lot of different variations of everything.

The thing is, he's not asking about anchor text rations, he's asking how to pick the actual words to use for anchor text.

Looking at a previous thread, he tries to disguise the fact he is looking for spoon feeding.

The SEO client must be imaginary if he doesn't know what "Anchor Text" is and his real question is "How do I find profitable keywords?"

If you took money from this guy please give it back, if you haven't please just tell him that something happened and you'll no longer be able todo SEO on his site, but instead you'll help him find a more qualified professional. Then come here and pass it off to a pro.

You're right. Every other post was trying to bait people for spoon feeding, this is more than likely another one.
How on earth do you say you have a few #1 rankings, then ask what anchor text to use.
Sounds like he's just too lazy to put absolutely any effort into learning anything and wants people to do it for him.

Wow lots of negatives for people to feed off of in these replies...

Yes, I have been in business over 20 years; I have several successful companies. Yes, I've done well. No, I'm not a seo guy full time. I've done my own seo and it's worked out for me.

I just wondered if anyone might have some insights I overlooked. There is a worry that comes with working for others. We all want to be sure we are doing our best. $300 is dirt cheap. Most of us make $300 while we are sleeping at night, so don't think my customer is stressed about the cash. The $300 was a token between long-time business associates. It is because we are old friends that I want to cover every base and even re-check the basics.

I have my techniques, but I'm always looking for info about other tools and methods. Give me grief if you want. I asked a basic question to see if some of you would be willing to offer anything I missed along the way. I'll stick to what I know, since it works for me. I just wondered if anyone had a method I might learn from. In the last 2 years I have sent over 100 jobs to seo pros while I studied and worked hard on my own business.

I have a good team at my business. Most things run smoothly without me and I've had a blast here on the forums. It feels like the right time to take one of these projects and see what I can do with it. If I ruin it, I'll buy him out, as he has already asked me to do. This is too much info to post. Just know, I would never hurt anyone.

Everyone here had their first job handing someone else's account; so yeah I asked a basic question to see if I could learn something other than what I know, but let's not make it a free-for-all of negativity.

Well the reason for the negativity is that both those questions are too broad and the answers should be known by somebody taking on clients.

If you need to ask how to choose anchor text or how to conduct keyword research then you should not be doing SEO for anybody else. (The answers to those questions CAN be found by searching the forum and we would have given links to a couple of great write ups if you were a noob but this should be basic knowledge for somebody getting paid to carry out SEO)

Try asking a specific question and you will get better answers.

Let me ask this differently, in case someone new pops in. When you are choosing your anchor text, do you simply look for the high-yield terms, or diversify the OBL in your pages? Some people say extra OBL (Out Bound Links) added in the link pages with separate anchors get better results, but others say that extra anchors to the same URL are simply treated as one, and risk Google counting them multiple times, eventually doing more harm than good.

What links do you use? Do you just pick anchors that coincide with the keywords you shoot for, or add extra anchors for more juice, or add some less relevant anchors into the mix to make the links seem more natural? If you have a strategy, I'd be interested to know.

I tend to choose anchor tags by shooting for main keywords I'm targeting, and use them as anchors. I go half that way, and half no-follows with different anchors for a more natural look.

What's your take?

Give back the money.

You're gonna do more damage than good. Especially if it's a friend/associate of yours.

Tanking your business associates' website is never good business.

Sometimes asking a question very broadly kicks off a conversation we can all get a tidbit from. Sometimes it backfires I guess. I do hope someone will offer some insight on the more specific question I offered.

Hah! Yeah it might end up being my website. :) Humility demands accepting all possible fates.

Alright I am going to give you an answer but probably not the one you want. You asked about picking anchor texts, but with low competition and big searches. In my experience, these are few and far between, and most of the time, the big searches but low competition, there is no money in these keywords.

Instead, just take a competitor in the niche, check out their links, run those anchors through the keyword tool and notice which gets the most searches. Then all you have to do is simply beat them at their own game.
