A few months ago I had gotten burnt out and decided to take a break from everything. School, IM, family, friends, all were put to the side while I focus on myself. I see my future profits being cut soon, so I'm back. I have a couple of questions:

    1. My hosting had expired about a month ago and my sites on this host has been down for about 3 weeks (22 days). Before going down, the sites were ranking amazingly at the top. Now they're gone with no rankings.

I just paid the hosting and sites are online again. What scenario am I in?

    a) Should I expect them to within a week or so go back to where they were?
    b) Should I throw 5-10 blog posts at the site so Google can see my site is back and realize my SEO is better than my comp and put me back where I was?
    c) Site's been down for 3 weeks and therefore has died. Google will not give back ranking regardless how good my SEO compared to comp.

    2. One site even had its domain expire at the same time hosting was down. Does domain expiring affect this site differently than the others? If so, what scenario am I in?

    a) Should I expect them to within a week or so go back to where they were?
    b) Should I throw 5-10 blog posts at the site so Google can see my site is back and realize my SEO is better than my comp and put me back where I was?

I would just wait and see what happens - it's the lowest-friction course of action. Your sites will at least re-index again, and when they do, you'll know better where you stand.

Honestly, I would throw a few blog posts out there to help your ranking. Even if this doesn't do anything for Google, it will let former site visitors know you're back so you might get a little return traffic to help bring things back on track. This goes for both sites. An expired domain can take a site completely offline from a user's perspective, so it's pretty much the same problem.

Stop asking those "should I" questions and just do it. In SEO, only those who test the most or aren't afraid to try new ideas succeed the most. I keep telling anyone interested in SEO this.

I had same problem before, my website was ranked, hosting went down for 3-4 days, then it was up, but the ranking never came where they were.

I had 1 site which i put down because of a DDOS attack. After 3 months, i put it up again and it gained the initial rankings in less than a week.

I had a website about 2 years ago which something similar happens, and it went back up on Google.

Patience is a virtue. Should bounce back up after the sites get re-indexed. If not, well then you've some work to do.

Most sites have bounced back to where they were before the hosting outage.
