Do you think this is legit?

The letter is from License Compliance Services on behalf of Agenxe France-Presse for an image from my businesses blog that they claimed was unauthorized use. Their website is www.LCS.global

I took it down after reading this but they wrote in the letter they still require payment for past usage.

From searching online I found some different opinions on whether to pay these guys or not.

One thing I do is they don't seem to have any office anywhere with an image though I did talk on the phone to someone and they are asking for $175. It's not so much money but I wonder if these guys would try to sue me or if this is a scam?

    Thanks

Since you've already responded to their initial email, you should probably see this through.

How did you use the image?

What country do you reside in?

    Do you have a lawyer?

In the U.S. it was in a blog post article. No lawyer either.

You should contact LawTrades. They offer a free 20 minute consultation with a lawyer. I've used them before and was very impressed. It might be the best way to solve this dispute. Most of these "extortion" emails are auto-generated, so it's likely you could get this settled for much less (or nothing, hopefully).

Where did you find the image in the first place? Did you steal the image from them specifically? IMO I wouldn't worry about it. Just ignore them if they continue to contact you. Sounds fishy.

I wouldn't be worried at all. U must pay something thru email? Yeah it's a scam. I don't respond to lawsuits unless they come in my mail.

It's hard to recommend this if he/she is running a business in the United States. Ignoring IP disputes is never a good idea. LCS, Getty, et al have pretty well documented aggressive collection techniques. You can take the chance, but it may not be worth it. Best chance of a reasonable outcome is to contact a lawyer and get educated advice.

To note, my advice is predicated on the fact that the message did actually come from LCS Global and LCS global is the RM for Agenxe France-Presse.

Looks like copyright trolls, sending random notifications looking for small fishesh . It happens all the time. Remove the image in question and keep living :) Nothing to worry about.

This is BlackHatWorld. We see this stuff all the time. While I realize there's a slim chance it's legit, I'm yet to see that reported here on BHW after hearing of several similar instances.

They did write in the email that removing the image doesn't get rid of the problem though I did anyway

It seems like paying the fee would be cheaper than a lawyer though since it's $175.

Thanks. That was an interesting read and I'm still not sure what to think. The letter is on behalf of Agence France-Presse which appears to have a few locations in and outside of the U.S.

Like we said ... another fisherman :) Ignore it. . 99% of the time they don't bother visiting a website they collect domains through images.google.com . Next time you are going to use such images, do small changes with photoshop on them so cant be detected
