...received this message in Webmaster Tools today:

"Specifically, look for possibly artificial or unnatural links pointing to your site that could be intended to manipulate PageRank. Examples of unnatural linking could include buying links to pass PageRank or participating in link schemes.

We encourage you to make changes to your site so that it meets our quality guidelines. Once you've made these changes, please submit your site for reconsideration in Google's search results.

If you find unnatural links to your site that you are unable to control or remove, please provide the details in your reconsideration request."
I then deleted the links that I think are responsible for triggering this message.

Which brings me to my question:

Do I still have to send off a reinclusion request?

Or should I just wait, in the hope that I won't get a penalty after all now?

Thanks

yes you should or they will not get back to you

cant hurt anyway

what kind of links where those? bad spun content?

Ahh man! ... This is the worst mail. Dealing with penalty is hell. More hell if you have worked your ass off on the site.

Send a reconsideration request and good luck!

I know this must be a common question, but surely if you can get a penalty for bad backlinks, couldn't your site be targeted by a competitor? or that be used as an excuse.. Surely they can't penalize you for what someone else could of done.

Don't know for sure...it's not as if the Big G tells you WHICH of the links in your link profile are the offending links.

But I'm guessing that it's the recent batch of spun content on Web2.0 sites where I stupidly didn't vary the anchor text.

And it's one of those search terms that's probably highly prized and under heavy scrutiny.

So - you guys don't think it's enough to just remove the links...I really MUST send off the reinclusion request ?

Yup you need to send off the request and make it as clear and detailed as you can or you won't get anywhere.

hey...

just make sure you have no cloaking ...i got the same messege for one of my sites and my problem was i had some links cloaked that i forgot about ....the only penalty i got was a PR drop ...since then my site is PR0 ( was PR2 before) the happy thing i can tell you is that i didnt loose anything in serps...so to be honest i think you should just check 100% for the problem and fix it.

PS: i didnt contact them for anything ..their "bot" will do that for ya :)
