I wonder if it is possible why Google deindexed a whole bunch of URLS on a certain day and never indexed it again.

For 6 months they were indexed without any problems and then just on 1 day I lost them.. I can see that it is going insane slow to get them reindexed!!

Any idea how to check this?

There's no direct way that I know of.

Maybe they're on the errors page? Down time or some network issue? Either way, Google does not show recently deindexed pages. If the number of deindexed pages shows decline, it means they were deindexed weeks ago, maybe months.

Just try to submit your site on google search console and ask in webmaster for deindex query

I have had this happen to me several times of the years. Check the date when the de-indexing began and then compare the date to Google's algorithm changes such as Panda, Penguin etc..

I think that if there are no messages from Webmastertools about your site and you face this problem it is ALMOST ALWAYS an Algorithm penlaty

You also want to check your PR on Bing and compare. If you are still ranking in Bing; then you have found your answer.
