This is true and not so "rare" if we are going to be honest, if we are going to lie then it is.

In any case, all this is very scary...

"Google's John Mueller said in this past Friday's hangout that in rare situations some sites can get stuck in some sort of algorithmic penalty limbo or black hole state and not be able to recover because Google stopped updating that algorithm. He said this can lead to some sites not being able to recover for several years."

This happened to one of my sites. They gave penalty for backlinks. I disavowed all backlinks and submitted for review, but it took them over 2 years to approve it.

Yeah, it sucks...

We all know about this, but when someone like Mueller says it in public, it means it's a million times stronger, harder, and worse situation than we can even imagine.

Oh man not this Mueller again

Another example of google being an absolute tyrant and fucking with people's lives. I honestly would not be surprised if someone showed up with a gun one day at their HQ and started blasting.

They are becoming more and more shameless about their failures. They are so arrogant as if they last until judgement day.

Dude chill out a bit. At the end of the day it’s google’s property. If your site is found being abusing their system, it’s natural that they’d ban you. I’m actually surprised the penalties are not forever and can actually “expire”.

man, why the panic,
it's just a few years :D:D:D
you guys are really impatient :D:D:D

This has to be true, my one blog went from hundreds of daily visitors to around dozens, if not less.

I hired some experts to create awesome disavow files.

what are the possibilities, and what can I do to avoid this?
  1. Regularly have an expert review all backlinks and generate disavow files to submit to google
  2. Don't link to (too) man crappy outlinks
  3. Maintain high-quality, realtime security for website
  4. Resolve manual actions/social engineering content and other GSC errors quickly.
