Okay, who can tell me what's going on .....

In Google, when I do a search of a local KW for one of my local sites I'm in between Google Places, so #1 position is a Google place, #2 is superpages listing, I'm #3 with my site, #4 down are all Google places until 3 more at the bottom as regular search (13 listings are showing up for the local KW)

How is it that one site is in-between all the places?

Upon discovering that Google is showing places for local search now I'm slotted way down for my regular SEO sites and yet one of them is #3 and isn't a Google places?

    Who knows anything about this?

PS If you don't know that Google is pulling the 7 box as SEO results and listing those as search results be advised now. Goggle is saying "either do places or you won't show up" The only way I've been able to get rid of the places showing up as SEO results is to use "KW" [quotes in KW] and then search.

I have other sites that have gone from #1 to #8 because places are pulling instead of actual search results and yet I have one site that is INBETWEEN the places listings?

    What?

I hate Google. BTW these are all the same site themes in the same niche just different locations so it would be "niche KW + location" ie:, botox sacramento

How on earth can Google put one site at #3 inbetween places???? I need to know why it's ranking so I can get my other sites ranking and yet they are all the same theme and niche. I am stumpered!

Who knows the answer to this one? What is up with their frigging algo? As far as I'm concerned every client site I manage just got raped. My #1s have all fallen off.

Once again, Google is ramming their idea of what my experience ought to be down my throat. In one way it's okay 'cause I can bill for this but the other is now I have 2 levels of competition; SEO and Places that I have to configure instead of just one.

    Thoughts?

    thx, the cowboy

I know how you feel its happend to me! My site has gone way down in the ranking for a niche im doing. This google places has totally ruined my business. No one wants to rent a site thats being out ranked by 8 google places....

Also with your site im guessing googles search engine is just messin your site around.
I have also heard people have builded so many backlinks that there site out ranks the google places; but i've never seen it happen.

edit: Its meant to be there new way of helping local businesses, it was released a couple days ago. So if you type in anything like london dentist or any other niche it will show up other bussinesses in google places.

personally i think its crap and i hope they switch it off and make it an option people can turn on.

I just noticed this today as well, it's pretty annoying to say the least. Even as a regular Google user, there's a reason I'm searching for "XYZ" on the internet...because I want results from the internet not down the street... If I wanted something local I would have searched "XYZ Miami Florida" etc

I'm finding similar results with country specific hosting/domains being penalized in ****** results.

Take a .co.uk domain, host in in UK and don't pick a country of preference for the target audience in webmaster tools. It ranks #1. In USA G search is used to rank #1.

Over the course of the past 12 months, despite strong linkbuilding efforts, the site stays #1 in UK and has slipped bigtime in USA so that there is now a big difference in placement (page 2).

The only options are move to .com, move hosting to USA or select USA as a target in webmaster central. ARGH.

Google is now combining local search results and organic seo. If you have a fake listing your ass is grass...it's just a matter of time.

I'd say the OP is luck to have his site sandwiched between the G Places listings...I think they are still working out the algorithm and will eliminate the organic listings from the middle of the Places listings sooner or later. It definitely makes it more competitive for local search phrases.

I everyone that sees these kinds of threads gets a wake up call. If you are serious about making money from organic SEO, then you need to be paying attention to what Google is doing.

It's not hard to do since they basically tell you exactly what they are doing and what changes are coming beforehand inside their blog and Matt Cutts' blog as well.

If you aren't paying attention to Google and it's changes , you are putting your business and all the effort you put into it in a risky position.

    Great advice Yukinari84...

Hey did you notice that the little map on the right that floats... covers up the ppc ads? Can't believe big g is blocking itself from making money in those positions by having the map cover up the ads. I wonder if that means eventually the big g is going to cahrge for the maps to make up for lost revenue from the ppc column?

I noticed this too and I'm thinking that since Google is an advertising company disguised as a search engine this is about how they're going to make more money with local search (now that it's exploding). "Google" the company now owns more of the page whilst regular SEO loses out.

Another shake out and just one more reason why I need to really focus on media buying and dump my clients once I've got enough replaceable income.

Solely relying on G for income (at least your IM income) can be frustrating. The more you can find traffic sources from elsewhere the better!
