As many seasoned SEMs know, BING/MSN is often conversion heaven with its traffic (even though it often doesn't send as much of it).

Google in a backhanded attempt to discredit bing for it's data collection, actually was feeding a secret message to us BHers to manipulate them.

In their recent blog post (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/...le-search.html) Amit opens the floodgates by sharing what they discovered in their own tests:

As we see it, this experiment confirms our suspicion that Bing is using some combination of:

* Internet Explorer 8, which can send data to Microsoft via its Suggested Sites feature
* the Bing Toolbar, which can send data via Microsoft?s Customer Experience Improvement Program

or possibly some other means to send data to Bing on what people search for on Google and the Google search results they click. Those results from Google are then more likely to show up on Bing. Put another way, some Bing results increasingly look like an incomplete, stale version of Google results?a cheap imitation.

Translation: Turn on all your data sharing and IE stuff, have a bot search out your keyword terms and click on your website = security that keyword in Bing.

How cool is that?

?Do you have any evidence that the Suggested Sites feature
sends this information back to Microsoft? I ran some packet captures and
they didn?t seem to show that.?

MATT : yes, we do have that evidence. I believe you?re looking in the
wrong process. Also, the process sends the data in a batch to Microsoft
periodically
, so you won?t see it as you click from result to result.
I wanna know wich service sends data.
Would like to put all my sites into this file and blast bing periodically :p

I just installed IE8 on my computer yesterday and searched for my site using Google without having any knowledge of this thread. :p Sounds really fantastic! I will love to try this using more generic keywords, but in what consists this process if I do it manually?

I just need to search in Google for keywords related to my site and then click directly to my site no matter if I have to go to page 3 to do so? And then after a while it will start to appear my site in the first results of Bing using those specific keywords?

just read the site, good find.

So to some it up, google wants 2 things.

1.More people to trust google and use google instead of other search engines.

2.They want bing to stop, and they don't care it as much as they want the bing users to switch to google because if all users switch to google, I don't think they would even care if bing copy the whole search exactly.

But well, I'm not targetting bing, to me seo means ranking in google, only GOOOOOOOOOOGLE. YEa.

No I don't buy it, as I have many sites on page one of bing and some of them have the google bot banned by .htaccess. The way I see it its google saying its ok for us to collect data on other search engines, and every one that uses our search engine, gmail, moble services, and the list could go on and on, but hell the no one can do that to us
About time some one gave google a run for its money go bing go

Almost more interesting than their experiment is that the Google blogspot page shows a link to this post here on BHW in their 'link to this post list' below the article - masking links with anonym.to doesn't seem to be so anonymous...

What about sites that rank N1 in Yahoo & Bing but are nowhere to be seen in Google?
I could hardly imagine they got many clicks in Google via IE8 to rank high in Bing.

Someone from google must have added it manually. They do lurk here too ya know. :)

In their lab they created a 'long tail' keyword.. in other words a term that is less likely to have very little competition.

Also considering what they gathered.. I don't think the ranking really matters.. I think it's only the click that gets transmitted them.

This would sound stupid but i hardly ever use IE, how do you turn on data sharing?

this is a pretty cool idea but i'm sure you'd have to do alot more to actually see results from it
