Google Really Is A LOT More Stupid & Predictable Than I Give Them Credit For.

I'm trying to add an alternative view on Google since this forum tends to get rampaged by chaos and confusion on a daily basis.

Google is smart. I don't think many people can deny that. But they are also much more stupid and predictable than I ever thought I could possibly imagine.

Do you guys remember when you were noobs to SEO and use to go through the Google dance? Do you see how often people post about the Google Dance on BHW? Do you remember how worried YOU use to get when Google started dancing dirty on your first site?

    Or even your 2nd site, 3rd, 4th, 5th etc?

But there comes a point... I guess I'm just hitting that point where I realize Google REALLY IS DUMB. And you should never ascribe randomness, bad luck or bad decisions to what can be ascribed to mere stupidity.

Quick example. I have a 3 year old site that's been ranking stable as hell on pages 1 & 2 for years now. If I showed you the graphs for the last 6 months the lines would be mostly straight with very slight variations, going up or down a few positions here and there. But mostly stable.

I decided it's time to juice the site up a bit and get it ranking back to authority land. So I found an old niche relevant site I created 2 years ago. Awesome content, very clean backlink profile and perfect metrics to be the first new link in a year. The first of many more to come to slowly come. So I put the link on the homepage and think "this probably won't do shit".

Then I log into my metrics the following day and see an overall drop of 120 positions between 6 primary keywords. Most the others stayed the same.

And for the first time in my life I actually LAUGHED MY ASS OFF. Like a crazy man.

Cause it's a really liberating feeling to fully realize, acknowledge and understand how dumb and predictable Google can be.

When I think about it.... I can't think of 1 time I built a link(s) to a site where it didn't lose rankings first. New sites are an exception. In the respect that you can't really track what's happening at first. But I'm curious. For marketers who have had sites in the top 50-100. Maybe it ranked with good on page and no backlinks. Or maybe it was just an older site you didn't backlink in a while. Can you think of 1 time where you started backlinking a site like that and it didn't lose rankings first?

    I've never seen it.

You predicted a very broad idea, but you don't have the "complete" formula to rank yet.

    .

I think that?s rather clever of them

How many people will be frightened, when they see an overall drop of 120 positions, and as sequential remove that link?

    Now that might be dumb..

It is very predictable. Unfortunately I have not found my personal method to get the predictable results I want though. The methods I have came up with usually end up with my sites starting out around rank 100, then dropping to nowhere, then being 2nd page, then slowly falling off the pages back down to rank 100.

Can never seem to get to the first page or maintain. Still searching though :) Maybe I just need more time. But I agree it is very predictable.

I really don't get the point of this thread. We knew this since many years ago. Also, for your reference Google is an algorithm! Look up the definition of an algorithm and you will see why there are certain things which are pretty predictable.
