I was doing my usual stuff of checking keyword rankings, how many links in GWT and the other normal things to keep on top of SEO.

Now yesterday, 4 out of my top keywords have dropped like a rock in just 24 hours.
All these keywords were in the top 4 results in google searches, now they are ranking anything from position 40 to position 72

Two other keywords dropped between 10 and 15 positions.

So basically 60% of my keywords for no reason I can see have dropped off the face of the earth in 24 hours.

Today however ranking reports show positions have increased by between 3 and 8 positions.
Not a lot but do you think i would recover from such large drops?

I have NO warnings or messages in Google Webmaster Tools.

Any suggestions what I can do as all affected keywords are what brings 85% of my website traffic!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Help :banghead:Google:fight:

Hey sorry to hear about your site...There was a Google Peguin 1.1 refresh that Matt Cutt's announced on his Twitter two days ago (May 25th). Maybe that has something to do with it? Like were you affected prior with the Panda or other Peguin updates?

It's because of the latest penguin update. You won't have got any messages in web master tools because it's an algorithmic penalty and not a manual one. The same happened to one of my sites after the first penguin update.

Basically it works like a filter that doesn't run all of the time and is looking like it runs 1 a month on the 25th of each month (or at least it has in April and May). If something doesn't fit into their guidelines, you will get a penalty. It has got a lot of people scratching their heads.

The difficulty is Google have released very little information about what has changed and because it is not a manual penalty, you don't get an emailing telling you what is wrong. Reconsideration requests don't work either because it's not a manual penalty.

the only thing you can probably do is wait until the next update and see what happens then...

I have a site that survived Penguin 1.0 but tanked on Penguin 1.1.

A brief history of the site:

    Around one year old
No BH SEO performed (no blogs, no bookmarks, no wikis, no web 2.0s, no paid links, no directories, etc.)
Just a few backlinks from related communities I'm involved in
Onpage density is less than 6% for main keyword (I have sites ranking still with 10%+ on homepage)
    Not in Google Webmaster Tools
    No Google Analytics
No Adsense, no CPA offers (not monetized at all)
Each page is high quality with some taking 4-6 hours of research before posting
It's a hobby site for me and something that I'm personally involved in and fund as a citizen (charity)

My conclusion is that Google does not want us to create quality content. Google simply wants to dictate how much money everyone connected to the internet hands over to them. It's crap like what happened to this site, which by the way is not monetized so I lose no money where ever it ranks, that makes me think that Google needs to start firing some people. Granted, this site was not ranking first page because it had few backlinks. However, a drop from 28 for its main keyword to 490 and a loss of all of its long tail keywords is an absolute joke for a site thats sole purpose is to help others. If Google keeps this crap up, I may not even have the money to continue with that project at all anyway. :(

What i don't get about this update is the lack of information Google has given us. If i had a site that i did some blatant BH link building on using automation tools blast 1000s of links daily going straight to my site, i would get a link warning. Perhaps then i will get a manual penalty telling me what was wrong. I could then go and correct this and continue should i want to.

This update though is attacking both BH and WH sites and slapping sites that aren't doing much wrong and with no indication of how to fix them. I don't see the point of this because it makes it very difficult for people to make their sites better and people could easily make their site worse wrongly trying to correct the faults.

Obviously long term it won't matter as it will have been enough time for test results to come in with a bit of understanding but short term it is very frustrating.

    Hi ,

    Thanks for your reqply.

No...my site has never been affected by Panda or the Penguin updates. As a matter of fact I got a traffic boost during these updates.

Yeah you made some good points there.

Its got me banging heads wondering what the hell have i done wrong.

I mean hey I did manual backlinks , unique articles (which i wrote myself and are not plagiarized)....social bookmarking and the usual stuff. But nothing crazy like 10,000 scrabe box comments for one keyword and such.

Does anyone think my rankings will return or if my SEO efforts will being them back etc?

    Ok...here is quick update:

    (1) One of my keywords has go up 40 odd positions today (previously it was position 88).
    (2) Some other keywords have gone up by between 1-5 positions.

I have done NOTHING to the site since the 24th, except:
    (a) Add in re-canonical to the header
    (b) Added in a plugin that adds a capucha to the contact us form
    (c) Placed 2 or 3 comments on high pr and high traffic .EDU domains
    (d) Made one tweet

I made two articles but have NOT published them, they are in draft. Plan to see what happens over the next 5 days (by doing nothing), and then publish one of the articles and see what happens over the next three days.

    So...lets see what happens.
