I have a site that has been trouble since August 2010 when I relaunched a new version with much more content.

My homepage used to rank in the top 3 for many high competition keywords around 120,000,000 results.... did so for 1 year until the relaunch.

After I added all that new content, Google basically refuses to rank my homepage for those keywords anymore. Instead of my homepage in top 3, it's ranking some random subpage that happens to have the keyword SOMEWHERE in it, around 100-500 in the SERPS. The pages it's ranking instead are not at all optimized for those keywords. They are things like very old shitty blog articles, forum posts, etc that just happen to have the keyword in the URL.

I've deleted some of these pages are 301ed them to my homepage, but it's been almost a week and google still hasn't updated that.

Any suggestions? Just get rid of almost all content on my site?? It used to be really small (under 50 pages) and when I added more content, i lost ranking within 1 month.

    Thanks!

You mean I should block G from indexing the pages that are cannibalizing my homepage, right?

I've already 301ed them to the homepage. Is that not enough?

    personal opinon is that either

it's new back in the index and google is just adjusting through things

or there's something triggering a filter on the main page, ie keyword stuffing, something they don't like about h tags, etc.

I'm a bit confused - it was never out of the index, so it couldn't be new back in the index.

I have noticed that over time I lost backlinks to my homepage because subscriptions failing without me knowing... then I didn't want to buy the links again because i thought if it disappears for 2 months and then reappears it's obviously paid

Yes, thats What I mean. 301 redirect is not enough. just add a line in robots.txt and you will be fine again :D

Ok I've done that and now Google has switched to ranking other pages of my site instead.. sucks that I have forums... it's ranking a post like "what's the best widget for my dog living outside?" at like... #415 in the SERPs instead of my homepage for best widget in the top 10...

    Hey man,

I had the exact same problem a couple of months ago. Happened for ALL my pages. I made some changes to my robots.txt file, but I'm not 100% sure that is what ended up fixing it.

Either way, within a week, all my rankings came back and pages were ranking for the correct keywords. If you'd like to see my exact robots.txt file, just shoot me a PM :)
