Since it has become virtually impossible to outrank Google Places in search results, are people still focusing on organic sites with the intent to advertise, or have people started offering Google Places pages to business in lieu of organic pages.

I was entertaining the idea of building pages to advertise but any recent search I have tried has brought about 10 results for Google Places and then organic results, virtually rendering organic pages useless.

Any feedback on this would be great!

    Thanks in advance.

Why not offer both? For most local searches it's pretty easy to rank, you might as well... People still check out a company's website, depending on what they're offering. Plus returning visitors who are trying to find their site may search for them by name in google and then you'll want to have a website to rank for their business.

I do the two. However, organic results give me better results. Most results in Google places are sites which have duplicate sites and details. It is always difficult to beat those sites in Google Places.

It sucks now that you can't view the links / citations associated with the listing. Often listings that are closest to the middle of the town are the hardest to beat, Google needs to remove this & focus more on content/links etc...

If you submit the sites to local business directories you will also be able to appear in the google maps as well. It will take time but it will certainly be worth the effort.
