Google places always poses a bit of a challenge for us as it can quickly re-order the rankings.

I am currently struggling with a keyword where Google places has recently put up a list of 10 places in front of me (which my client website doesn't show up in).

The strange part to me is we have a google places page, it has more information and reviews than most of the places that are ranking higher.

Has anyone ever looked into what criteria Google Places orders its place pages on? (I'm not looking to beat out Google Places, just win inside its listings)

Did you checked the age of listing. I suppose the age factor is important there. Seems to me the age of those listing which are ranking higher must be old than your client's page.

not sure re the age criteria

as an example, I set up a google places account for a friend about 5 weeks ago, had a few high PR backlinks added to the main site and within 5 days there google places was at position A

Now others that were B - G position were older and in many cases a lot older

However with the quality backlinks in place it has stuck to position A for the last month , therefore I dont think age is affecting it

Can you see the quality of the links that the competitors above have got? maybe its just having higher PR sites linked to your clients site?

The places listing has been around for ages; although I never thought about perhaps building a few high quality rankings for the places page. Our website has great backlinking structure, but there wouldn't be any backlinks to the places page!

then its apparent what boom1 said is kinda true. May be try building some high quality links and see if it outranks other listings. Could be interesting to see. Keep us posted.

Yeah I will keep you up to date.

I also noticed that the top person in this keyword has a review with a medal beside it that notes "Best Ever" - not sure what it means or how it was achieved but it may have an impact that I will look into further

Update: Best Ever is a badge you can give to your favourite reviews in Google Places each user is only allowed 10 and it counts as an extra star. May be key to helping rankings - not sure yet though (not even sure if ratings help yet)

If you mean keyword building on the Google places link then that may make some sense if you mean just build a name in directories that wouldn't have an impact unless you link it to the places page
