google places screwed me over

so I was trying to rank for a competitive keyword for my main business.
I tried and tried and tried. I jumped from page 3 to page 2. Then I jumped to #9 in page one. Then I tried and tried and tried and now I am no. 3 for this keyword. well, except that I am not really number 3 because just a week ago, google decided to display places results at the very top of the page for my keyword. so now I am really no. 13.
so i am getting no clients.
how the hell do i become A or B in places? Please dont say yelp and citysearch reviews, I have tried that and it hasnt worked.

so the lesson: try to diversify your keywords because you never know how google is going to change its results. I spent probably close to $5,000 and lots of time and now i am screwed.

"latex glove hats" shouldn't be that hard to rank for, maybe its not that big of a niche. Make sure you use "exact" on Google's keyword tool.

Try getting a google places listing for the site then.

Go type in google, google places and then submit your company to be placed in that area with your keywords. But how to get your listing to A or B, im not sure.

You could try using multiple accounts to write reviews about your company, and maybe send fake clicks. That might help.

I do have a listing, but it never shows up in the top 10. I would like to be A or B, now its like Y or Z
