Since mid-December, I haven't been able to verify a Places business listing by phone or SMS. The only option I've gotten on my accounts is by mail.

Anyone know of why this would be?

either the phone number has been verified before, its not a landline number or phone verification isnt supported in your country, why dont you verify it by mail?

Yea, GP has ended phone verification for now (for the most part).

It's fine for the actual business owner, but if you're trying to find a lot of clients and/or creating listings to sell later on, it has become more difficult.

I've now been working city by city... creating listings in many niches in one city before moving on. I'll find one address in a city (usually a hole in the wall small business/newstand) and offer them $5 per postcard that they hold for me (or mail back to me once every week or two).

For now, you are still able to use the same address to verify multiple listings if you change ANYTHING in the address... so you can use:

    Bills Newstand
    123 Main St.
    Suite 1
    Your City, State

Just change the suite number and the business name for each listing and you should be fine. I'm supposing they will at some point catch up to this as well... but for now it works. I have 12 businesses that have been successfully verified at a single small location.

Nice idea!!! but how are getting local phone numbers for each location? And have you been able to get the listings to rank well?

so is the stopping phone verification just in the usa then? It's still working in the uk. Just curious as our business model consists of profiting off seting up and optimising place pages for people, and its a pain in the arse when we have to send out postcards.

Hmm, if they're phasing that part out, it's going to make things a bit more difficult. C'est la vie!
