One of my competitors ranked a site for a keyword in my country.

its a german keyword and it looks like that he cant speak german and the content is poor crap.. it is unreadable.. he just put english articles in the poor google translator and posted it on his blog and slapped adsense on it... i dont really care about others but why everybody is telling that content is king and it is so hard after panda blablabla. i even contacted google and they really dont care about that^^ this site is #7 for the keyword i try to rank, also with 0 links.. and my site is highly optimized and hand written content without any adsense or affiliate links on page 2 with pagerank 2.

just wondering how is this possible.

    sorry for the bad english.

Did you take into consideration the age of the domain name?

IMPORTANT: Panda has only been rolled out for English content so far. And *only* for a few countries so far. Initially it was for the US only. Only recently they Pandized the UK results. It's a gradual roll-out.

Most of what people are saying about Panda is regurgitated crap from gurus who don't have a clue.

Your observation is correct: you don't need high quality content to rank post-Panda.

People who say that you do most likely either aren't ranking for anything and are just repeating the same old garbage as everybody else or they aren't experimenting with SEO. I have a lot of sites with "crap content" that are ranking nicely. Google doesn't care. I give searchers what they're looking for which usually is not content.

While its true that you don't need amazing content, it CAN help though, especially if its not your typical spun garbage content.

Why? Because people may actually link to you once you get towards the first page of the search results.

I've got sites that were ranking on the middle of the first page that have gotten natural links that helped move them into the top spots. Granted a bunch of the MNS/keywords won't get natural links this way so I'm referring to "broader" keywords.

As others have mentioned though, do what you can to build backlinks. For all you know his rankings may be temporary and could bounce back down shortly.

It is sad but true, sometimes you would see worthless sites having stupid content ranked high whereas more informative sites are no where to be found. This is one the corners that Google faces hardships and needs to look into this matter.IF you want to out rank him then build links.
